Unfortunately, whoever was responsible failed to leave any information behind. What we do know is that the Lichliters lived on Washington Street in Strasburg. The family consisted of William, who worked for the B&O Railroad at the Strasburg Junction, Elizabeth, and their children William, Zelda, and Pauline. Based on its location in our collection, it was most likely produced by one of the children probably during school. It would have been unacceptable for students to produce caricatures like this or to do anything considered “unproductive.” Today many students produce similar artwork in a less restrictive atmosphere. Title A name given to the resource Henkel Educational Print Subject The topic of the resource Henkel Family New Market (Va) Description An account of the resource A vast majority of European immigrants who came to Shenandoah County had a strong German background. With them came the Lutheran faith and the strong desire to preserve their heritage. The Henkel family of New Market built a printing business designed to serve this constituency. They mass produced German bibles, pamphlets, newspapers, and other works. One of their most notable works was the “ABCs of Instruction for Girls and Boys of the Lutheran Faith.” It was designed to teach children of these German immigrants in a way that maintained their cultural heritage in a country known for assimilation. The book included scores of drawings such as the one above that helped pupils learn both German and English words. The images that were used in this work were simple and wholesome in appearance. This reflected both the inexpensive, rudimentary printing machinery used by the Henkels and the Germanic cultural beliefs that centered around the simple lifestyle. The picture associated with school children promotes the subservient, dutiful children and the family matron fulfilling her duty to educate her children. What lessons do pictures teach us today? Title A name given to the resource Shenandoah Valley Drive In Pamphlet Subject The topic of the resource Shenandoah Valley Drive In (Woodstock Va) Woodstock (Va) Drive-in theaters-Virginia-Woodstock Description An account of the resource In 1949 the Shenandoah Valley Drive In Theatre opened just south of Woodstock Virginia. The theater had a single screen, large concession stand, and could accommodate 300 cars. This operation opened at the time when Drive-In Theatres were becoming exceedingly popular. All across the country individuals flocked to these theatres where they could enjoy movies from inside their own car. Families enjoyed the fact they could view a film while taking care of babies and small children without disturbing other patrons. Teenagers found them to be ideal date sites. During the 1970s the popularity of these sites began to decline. Competition from televisions, VCRs, and video rentals increased. Rising fuel prices, the introduction of daylights savings time, and growing operating costs reduced profit margins for these seasonal businesses. Shenandoah Valley Drive In fell victim to these factors and closed in 1983. During the almost 40 years it was in operation, the theater built quite a following. Locals retain many strong memories of watching movies at the site, visiting the concession stand, and enjoying the social aspects of the theatre. In 2000 a self-storage company purchased the land and demolished the screen and remaining buildings. Though the story is undated, its reference to troops going “over the top” in France indicates it was composed during that conflict. Most likely it was produced by a member of the Lichliter family who lived in Strasburg Virginia. During the first part of the 20th century many American were worried about a lack of patriotism among citizens. The transition to a new industrialized economy, migration of individuals to the city, the introduction of new forms of media such as magazines, and mass produced paperbacks, and the birth of new ideologies such as socialism caused many to believe the American way of life was disappearing. This concern would continue before, during, and after World War One as the world’s political climate changed dramatically. To combat this perceived decline, patriotism was introduced into the classroom. Founding tales such as George Washington and the cherry tree and Betsy Ross and the National Flag became part of the educational curriculum. This story was most likely a part of that effort and includes many of these stories.
