Title A name given to the resource A riding class on a jaunt through the woods Subject The topic of the resource Massanutten Academy (Woodstock Va) Description An account of the resource Little was recorded about horse-back riding at Massanutten Academy in 1940. Apparently most of it was done at Camp Lupton, the academy’s recreation center and maneuver grounds along the Shenandoah River east of town. In addition to camping facilities, large lodges, and ample swimming, the grounds offered equestrian trails that the cadets used on a regular basis. Riding classes were also offered and numerous students took advantage of the opportunity to become successful horseman. In conjunction with the school’s R.O.T.C. program, much of this was done to prepare students to use the horse in armed conflict, something that seems obsolete when compared to the mechanized state of warfare at the time. Camp Lupton would continue to serve as Massanutten Academy’s outdoor facility until late in the 20th century when the camp was closed. In 2013 it was donated to the Commonwealth of Virginia and is slated to become a state park. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Title A name given to the resource Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Description An account of the resource In 2018, the Truban Archives began compiling information to create a searchable database of enslaved people in Shenandoah County during the years 1772 to 1865. Under the direction of the archivist, several volunteers pored over various resources to compile spreadsheets of information. The data compiled included the following information (if known): names, names of enslavers, locations related to the person, birthdates, relationships, what happened to them (e.g., emancipation, willed, ran away), the records’ citations, and other notable information. The resources used to discover this information are varied, and all can be found at the Truban Archives. Volunteers examined newspaper clippings and several books, including abstracts of wills, research notebooks, births indexes, and a publication on the history of Edinburg, Virginia. Once the data of several hundred people were assembled, the spreadsheet was uploaded to the digital archives for public consumption. More people will be uploaded as the research progresses. Though much information has been found and made available to the public, unfortunately, Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Collection will never truly be completed. This is due to lost records, including missing newspaper copies and unrecorded information. Because of this, the collection is an ongoing process, with more entries being made as new information is discovered.
