They moved into the home provided for the superintendent which was undergoing a major renovation. Despite the high grass and peeling paint she noted “it was still beautiful.” Eventually Pattie and her husband made the house, and the academy, into their home. She worked at MMA’s library for several years before returning to school to become a LPN. She also was known for refinishing furniture, including much of what the academy used, and for rescuing stray animals. Before marrying William she had worked at the Medical College of Virginia as an assistant supervisor for their pre-school. Patty and William stayed at MMA until 1991 when he retired. They had one son and two daughters. Title A name given to the resource Mary Lou Polk Thompson Subject The topic of the resource Thompson, Mary Lou Polk Edinburg (Va) Description An account of the resource Mary Lou Polk Thompson was known for her involvement with the community and C.E. Thompson’s, an Edinburg building supply company that her husband was part owner of. Born on July 22, 1933 she moved to a house just south of Edinburg in 1961 following her marriage. The house was partially designed by her husband. In the Shenandoah Valley-Herald she noted the furnace malfunctioned on their first night and they “almost froze.” However, that didn’t dampen her love of winter sports. The couple added a ice skating rink and places for snowmobiles, and winter shooting matches on their properties. Outside of her home Mary Lou was deeply involved in the Edinburg Volunteer Fire Company’s auxiliary where she served as secretary and helped the organization raise the funds for its current fire station. She also was a member of the St. John’s United Methodist’s Methodist women. Mary Lou would die in May of 1985 at the age of 51. A native of Iowa, Dagny attended Iowa State College and later graduated from San Francisco State College. She then became a Home Economics teacher and head of department Capuchino High School in California. While there she was responsible for creating a new food service education program called FEAST that was later adopted at schools throughout the nation. After coming to Shenandoah County she became involved in the United Church of Christ, their Women’s Guild, and volunteered at local nursing homes. She died in 2009. The vast majority are letters from his time serving with the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater during World War Two. Joseph Martin Hines was born in Toms Brook Virginia on December 1, 1923. His parents were Mary Thelma Borden and Duval “Du” Hines. Duval ran a general store in Toms Brook. Joseph Hines attended Toms Brook High School and graduated in 1941. He was a member of the school band, in which he played the clarinet, and of St. Peters Lutheran Church where he sand in the choir. In 1941 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He trained at Parris Island in South Carolina in 1942. Later that year he was transferred to San Diego and later Hawaii. In 1944 he was part of the invasion force that landed at Iwo Jima. After the war he lived in Arlington Virginia and married Ruby Beaver. He died in 1969. Ruth volunteered with the Shenandoah Garden Club and other groups organizing arts festivals and bazaars. The couple found established retirement home in Fort Valley Virginia, near St. David's Church. Nicknamed "Shelpine" it was a place she found time to enjoy her hobbies of sewing and enjoying her beautiful surroundings. Kaye and her husband also enjoyed dancing and she noted "we got to every dance we can." Kaye also operated the Suffed Pepper Gift Shop in Woodstock which she purchased in 1975. Kathleen was active in the Edinburg Library, Edinburg Homemakers Association, and the Woodstock Christian Church. Her hobbies included painting, gardening, and canning. Her most passionate hobby was creating rubbings of medieval brass figures, traveling to Europe to learn the craft and to visit sculptures in England. While living in Shenandoah County, Joan was active with the Shenandoah County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary where she helped provide transportation services for patients, and was a disaster volunteer with the local chapter of the American Red Cross. She also played tennis, fished, raised flowers, and camped with her husband Truman. Biographical Text A native of New Market, and student of local history, Helen Bingham was proud of the fact that her ancestors owned Stanley Hall and that her parents managed the Pythian Children’s Home that operated there for many years in the mid 20th century. An amateur archeologist, Helen maintained a collection of native rocks, fossils, artifacts, and petrified wood and joined digs throughout the Valley with archeological teams. She was also an active volunteer with the New Market Area Library and other local literacy groups.
