Jackson (Va) Description An account of the resource This aerial photograph of the Town of Mt. Jackson Virginia shows a community much different than the one we know today. The most prominent difference is the layout of the town. While the downtown district may look the same, the areas beyond that have changed drastically. Many of the smaller homes and farm fields that are seen here have been replaced by subdivisions needed to house a larger population. The large commercial establishments on the north end of town and the growth in that direction are also absent as Interstate 81 had not yet been built. Transportation arteries have also been altered. Orkney Drive, pictured in the foreground, was once the main road between Mt. Jackson and Orkney Springs. It has since been relegated to a side street since being replaced by Orkney Grade which enters on the south end of town. The rail line, which has been mostly abandoned, was still in use as shown by the presence of railcars in the center of the picture. Many of the buildings that are pictured here have also changed use, been altered, or demolished. • The Triplett School, which once housed the community’s High, Elementary, Middle, and Vocational Schools, sits on the south end of town. Its north wing was demolished for the town’s fire department which moved from its original quarters shown on the north end of town. The building has been vacant since the company moved further south in 2016. • Additions have been completed at both the Lutheran Church and Methodist Churches, pictured prominently in the foreground. • The Nelson Theatre, in the center of town, has been closed and the building now houses other commercial establishments. • The farm bureau building, in the foreground, and the Triplett and Verhencamp Building, on the north end of Main Street were centers of the area’s farming community when the picture was taken. The farm bureau building now houses a flea market and the Verhencamp Building has been demolished. • The Triplett Building, which housed People’s National Bank and has since been demolished for a parking lot, sits prominently on the north end of Main Street. George William Smith (1900-2000) was an African American citizen of the town of Woodstock who was noted for his collections, including many items rescued from the trash. He lived on Water Street and attended Mt. Zion Methodist Church in Woodstock. Smith is buried at the Riverview Cemetery in Woodstock. Two hundred and seventy nine of the rescued photographs that are part of this collection were taken and/or processed by Woodstock photographer Hugh Morrison. An amateur photographer, George Smith took hundreds of photographs of the town during the 1980s and early 1990s for his amusement. The gas lamp in the foreground is the on the edge of the courthouse property looking across the street. Sometimes the area burned is called the "Boyer Block," or the "Boyer Block Fire." The remains of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church are visible on the corner of Court and Main Streets. This church was rebuilt using the original walls, now reinforced with a chain. On the corner where the boys are standing, was the W.F. Bargelt Jewelry Store, then W.T. Mauch, then a clothing store called "Horsey & Atwell" from Winchester, then the Geary Hotel and finally, an alley. All the buildings were 3-story frame except the clothing store which was only 2 stories tall. There were no water works in place or electricity. The hand engine holding the water took 24 men to pump. Title A name given to the resource Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Description An account of the resource In 2018, the Truban Archives began compiling information to create a searchable database of enslaved people in Shenandoah County during the years 1772 to 1865. Under the direction of the archivist, several volunteers pored over various resources to compile spreadsheets of information. The data compiled included the following information (if known): names, names of enslavers, locations related to the person, birthdates, relationships, what happened to them (e.g., emancipation, willed, ran away), the records’ citations, and other notable information. The resources used to discover this information are varied, and all can be found at the Truban Archives. Volunteers examined newspaper clippings and several books, including abstracts of wills, research notebooks, births indexes, and a publication on the history of Edinburg, Virginia. Once the data of several hundred people were assembled, the spreadsheet was uploaded to the digital archives for public consumption. More people will be uploaded as the research progresses. Though much information has been found and made available to the public, unfortunately, Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Collection will never truly be completed. This is due to lost records, including missing newspaper copies and unrecorded information. She also allegedly damaged 200 bushels of wheat, one bay mare, and a harness. George S. Hupp served as counsel. On October 13, 1852, Aggy was acquitted of all wrong doing. He was a member of Company E, Second Battalion, Seventh Regiment, First Marine Division. Reports indicate he succumbed to wounds obtained while leading his unit against an entrenched machine post and then refusing treatment. He was awarded the Silver Star. Zirkle had been born in Mt. Jackson Virginia and graduated from Triplett High School. He had found employment in the Baltimore Plant of the Glenn-Martin Company until joining the Marines in 1941. His was married to Mary Peterson of Baltimore and was also survived by his parents of Mt. Jackson and two brothers, both of which were serving overseas. Woodstock Post Office (Va) Calvert, W.M. Description An account of the resource In October of 1913 Frank J. Terrill brought his Curtis Biplane to the Shenandoah County Fairgrounds as part of the fair’s festivities. This is the first recorded time an airplane passed through Shenandoah County and would have been most local’s first opportunities to see a flying machine. The plane’s arrival brought an excited crowd to the fairground. The Woodstock post office added to the excitement by arranging to have Terrill fly mail from Woodstock to Mt. Jackson as one of the first national air mail deliveries. On October 17th Post Master W.M. Calvert and Terrill flew several pieces of mail from the Fairgrounds and dropped them near the post office to the delight of most locals. Despite his success in Shenandoah County, Frank Terrill’s days as a pilot were numbered. The dangers associated with early planes soon caught up with him and he was killed at a county fair in Chesterfield, South Carolina on November 13, 1914. However, locals would remain enamored with the airplane. As its use expanded, plane culture would become a permanent part of Shenandoah County. Among other things a fighter jet would be displayed at Woodstock’s town park when it opened in the 1960s, helicopter rides would be offered at the county fair during the late 20th and early 21st century, and airplane watching became a popular local pastime that continues to this day. These materials highlight Terrill's early flight and include a photograph of Terrill at the fairgrounds, an envelope from the flight, and Frank's business card.
