Title A name given to the resource Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Description An account of the resource In 2018, the Truban Archives began compiling information to create a searchable database of enslaved people in Shenandoah County during the years 1772 to 1865. Under the direction of the archivist, several volunteers pored over various resources to compile spreadsheets of information. The data compiled included the following information (if known): names, names of enslavers, locations related to the person, birthdates, relationships, what happened to them (e.g., emancipation, willed, ran away), the records’ citations, and other notable information. The resources used to discover this information are varied, and all can be found at the Truban Archives. Volunteers examined newspaper clippings and several books, including abstracts of wills, research notebooks, births indexes, and a publication on the history of Edinburg, Virginia. Once the data of several hundred people were assembled, the spreadsheet was uploaded to the digital archives for public consumption. More people will be uploaded as the research progresses. Though much information has been found and made available to the public, unfortunately, Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Collection will never truly be completed. This is due to lost records, including missing newspaper copies and unrecorded information. Because of this, the collection is an ongoing process, with more entries being made as new information is discovered. Biographical Text Lenora "Sis" Wender Myerberg was born in Woodstock Virginia on March 20 1910. In 1932 her and her brother Simon assumed ownership of "Wenders Department Store" in Woodstock and Mt. Jackson Virginia following the death of their father William. The store had operated by William and mother Minnie since 1914. As co-owner, "Sis" managed the two stores Women's Department. This required trips to New York City every 2-3 months to purchase merchandise and to stay abreast of trends. Her profession led to her being known for her immaculate appearance and fashion knowledge. A graduate of Woodstock High School, Lenora first attended Randolph-Macon Women's College and then Beaver College in Glenside PA. After graduating from Beaver College, she worked in New York City for a period of time before returning to Woodstock to work at Wenders. After Wender's closed in the early 1970s, Sis and her husband David enjoyed retirement in their family home on N. Church Street in Woodstock. There she spent time managing a legacy rose garden created by her mother, volunteering with the Woodstock Library, and managing the hospitality cart at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital. She died on December 31 1997 and is buried at Beth El Congregation Cemetery in Harrisonburg Virginia. Title A name given to the resource "Wagonner Shed" Subject The topic of the resource Edinburg (Va) Wagon Shed-Virginia-Edinburg Transportation facilities-Virginia-Edinburg Description An account of the resource This photograph shows a portion of the "wagonner shed" that was located along the Valley Turnpike (US Route 11) in Edinburg Virginia. The shed was used by crews operating freight wagons on the Valley Turnpike. These wagons carried produce and other local export items to ports and larger markets, typically Alexandria or Baltimore. This shed was a stopping point where crews could rest themselves and their teams over night. During the Civil War it was used to house Federal Troops. The structure was originally located in front of the house located at 211 S. Main Street in Edinburg. At the time of its construction, this property was owned by Phillip Grandstaff whose children Mary and Press lived in the house that still stands on the site. Later the shed was moved to the rear of the house which now houses Edinburg Trucks Hobby Shop and no longer stands. She also worked shifts at the hospital and as a private nurse. Irene grew up at Wakeman’s Grove. She had three children, was an active member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, and the Shenandoah County Cancer Society. She also painted and collected flowers while spending time at her cabin home.
