He is best remembered for his work as a poultryman, and as a former Mayor of Woodstock, and a former member of the Virginia General Assembly. Bill Shaffer was born in Middletown to Vernon Spitler (1884-1958) and Mary Leah (Stover) (1885-1973) Shaffer, originally from Page County. In 1920, the family lived for a time in Berryville, Clark County, where his father worked in a flour mill. They moved to Maurertown where his father became a poultry farmer and hatchery operator. Bill graduated from Woodstock High School and Massanutten Military Academy (MMA). At a young age, Bill was active in the Future Farmers of America (FFA) and the Baby Chick Association. When Bill registered for the WWII draft, he worked at the Shenandoah Commercial Hatchery, his father’s operation. He was described as being 5’11 ½” tall, 150 pounds, and wore glasses. He married Elizabeth Moorhouse (Jones) in her hometown of Albany, New York, in 1943. She had graduated from Russell Sage College and worked for the American Viscose Company (later known as Avtex Fibers) as the Director of Publicity and Public Relations for the Lewistown, Pennsylvania, plant. At the time of his wedding, Bill was serving as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates. He served from 1942-1947, and was followed by his father who served from 1950-1958. Bill became a partner in his father’s hatchery business as well as the Woodstock Canning Company. The Northern Virginia Daily published over 150 short notices about his involvement in the community and local politics during the 1930’s, 1940’s, and 1950’s. The 1950 census found Bill and Elizabeth living on West Locust Street in Woodstock along with two children: Susan L. and Andrew T. Shaffer. His occupation was “Hatchery man”. Bill spent his last years living in the Bayles Lake area of Loda, Iroquois County, Illinois. During the summer of 1923, Les married a girl from his hometown high school in Michigan, Mary Meader. At the time, Les’ occupation was “student”. Mary was a year behind him in school and they married in neighboring Berrien County. This marriage did not last. Les married Bertha Ely (1909-1993) in Lake County, Indiana, in June 1928. She was born in Michigan to Peter Franklyn (1877-1927) and Phebe Elvira (Woodruff) (1885-1952) Ely. Les and Bertha were married more than 50 years before Les died. Both the 1930 and 1940 censuses found the family living in Woodstock where Les worked at Massanutten Academy as an athletic coach and instructor. He and Bertha had two children, Lois and Leslie J. Fouts, Jr. Both of their children were born in Michigan. The family later moved to Georgia where, by 1950, Les worked as a teacher and coach for the private school, Woodward Academy, in Atlanta. His wife had a part-time job managing a book store. When Les died many years later, he was a retired football and swimming coach for Woodward Academy. Both he and his wife are buried in Fulton County, Georgia. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Ralph was killed in action in the Pacific Theater He died as a result of a direct bomb hit on his machine gun emplacement. It took place during the hours of darkness when his position was bombed by Japanese bombers. He received a Purple Heart for his heroism. He was 18 years old. The markings on his shoulder indicate he was a cadet in this photo. Stanley was one of at least ten children born to Tobias Samuel (1887-1957) and Maggie Catherine (Walters) (1896-1952) Clem, a farming couple in Fort Valley. Stanley Clem grew up in Fort Valley and was a 1946 graduate of Edinburg High School. He served in the U.S. Civil Air Patrol during WWII. After school, he landed a job with Bethlehem Steel as a crane operator at their plant at Sparrow Point, Maryland. In 1947, he was the best man at his brother, Paul’s, wedding in Baltimore, Maryland. A year later, Stanley married Barbara Jean (Donovan) Clem in Baltimore. The couple was married for 8 years before divorcing in 1958. They had two children together, however, one of them, Ronald Lee Clem (1955-1955) was born prematurely, and did not live. He married for the second time in 1960. His bride was Genevieve Strickler, a clerk living in Arlington but born in Woodstock. Her parents were Thomas and Olive Bertha (Sibert) Strickler. Stanley and Genevieve had at least one daughter together, Amy Loraine Strickler. When Stanley died, he was in Los Angeles County, California. His remains were buried in Fort Valley.
