Fred Beidler was born in St. Luke, son of Dr. C.C. Beidler, local veterinary surgeon, and Clara (Baker) Beidler. He graduated from Woodstock High School in 1932 and attended Massanutten Military Academy where he completed a business course. Fred worked at Wender's Department Store for 12 years. In 1945, with the help of his family, Fred started Beidler's Furniture in Woodstock, a G.E. major appliance and furniture store, which he operated successfully for 28 years. In 1973, Fred retired to Florida and sold the business to the Cline family who still operate under the name, Beidler's Furniture Store. Fred's sideline was buying older houses and converting them into two and three bedroom apartment houses. He also built several duplex houses and a four unit brick apartment house on US 11 S in Woodstock. He was formerly on the board of First Virginia Bank. John Landon Dirting was the son of Perry William (1871-1947) and Cora Alice (Barton) (1870-1928) Dirting, of Edinburg. He was working as a “Baggageman” for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company out of Pittsburgh when he registered for the WWI draft in May 1917. He served in France during WWI, as a Private with Company C of the 323rd Infantry. He entered the Army as a truck driver but became a signalman during his service. After the war, he returned to Shenandoah County and lived with his parents. The 1920 census found him teaching in a public school. By August 1921, he had been issued a Federal Prohibition Agent ID badge and was working for the IRS. He stayed with that career until he retired. He married Irene E. Ashenfelter (1895-1981) in June 1948, when he was in his fifties. By then, he had retired from Federal service and was farming. Irene was the daughter of George David and Metta Oris (Hite) Ashenfelter. She, too, was in her fifties when she married. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
