Title A name given to the resource Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Description An account of the resource In 2018, the Truban Archives began compiling information to create a searchable database of enslaved people in Shenandoah County during the years 1772 to 1865. Under the direction of the archivist, several volunteers pored over various resources to compile spreadsheets of information. The data compiled included the following information (if known): names, names of enslavers, locations related to the person, birthdates, relationships, what happened to them (e.g., emancipation, willed, ran away), the records’ citations, and other notable information. The resources used to discover this information are varied, and all can be found at the Truban Archives. Volunteers examined newspaper clippings and several books, including abstracts of wills, research notebooks, births indexes, and a publication on the history of Edinburg, Virginia. Once the data of several hundred people were assembled, the spreadsheet was uploaded to the digital archives for public consumption. More people will be uploaded as the research progresses. Though much information has been found and made available to the public, unfortunately, Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Collection will never truly be completed. This is due to lost records, including missing newspaper copies and unrecorded information. From left to right is an unidentified man, Worthington Arion, Catherine Arion, Bessie Arion, William Arion, and Marvin D. Arion. This family would operate this Quicksburg during the 1920s and 1930s. Their enterprise sold plows, shoes, gasoline, dry goods, machinery and numerous other items to serve the local farming community. An oral history interview notes it was a place where “you could get anything and if you went in there and he didn’t have it, he’d find it somewhere.” Three other similar enterprises also served the community during that period. The store also housed the community’s post office during the Republican administrations of the time period indicating William was a leader in the local party. Today Quicksburg is still home to a post office, one of the few unincorporated communities on the county to retain that service. However, it no longer supports the same number of commercial establishments. Easier transportation, a changing economy, and population shift to larger towns meant the closure of many country stores. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Stickler and Margaret May Strickler Subject The topic of the resource Sheetz, Margaret May Strickler (1915-2009) Kettler, Arlene Francis (Strickler) (1908-1986) Description An account of the resource Two sisters, Arlene Francis (left) and Margaret May (right) Strickler, posed together as children. Arlene and Margaret were born in Woodstock. the daughters of Joseph William (1882-1961) and Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Didawick) (1884-1972) Strickler. In the 1920 census, their father worked as a handyman and their mother was a servant in the household of Henry and Ida Bailey, where the family lived for many years. Arlene and Margaret were listed as “Lodgers” in the Bailey household. By 1930, Arlene worked as a nurse in a hospital, but still lived in the Bailey household. She moved to Glenn Dale, Prince Georges County, Maryland, sometime in the early 1930s. There, she was a registered nurse at Glenn Dale Hospital, a tuberculosis sanatorium and isolation hospital. The facility operated for decades and was an important public health institution near Washington, DC. In 1951, she married a physician who worked there, Dr. Martin Kettler. Dr. Kettler was born in Austria. They did not have children. When she died, Arlene lived in Washington, D.C. Her younger sister, Margaret, never left Shenandoah County. She married William Harrison Sheetz (1914-1996), a farmer in the Stonewall District, where she had grown up, and helped with the farm for the rest of her life. His parents were Alvin and Mamie (Fadeley) Sheetz and when he married in 1937, his occupation was “miller”. Margaret’s obituary noted she had been a member of Mt. Calvary U.C.C, a former Sunday school teacher, and had volunteered at Woodstock Clothes Closet. Margaret and William had a daughter, Barbara S. (Strickler) Burnshire. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
