Bly in his U.S. Army uniform. The stripe on his sleeve indicates he was a Private. He served in the Army's "Service Forces". Clyde was born near Strasburg, the son of Anthony Bly and Mary Ellen Sager. His father died when he was quite young and his mother married again to Earl L. Grove. Madeline Linton, or "Madge", as she was called by friends, was from Alexandria and was working at the Navy Torpedo Factory there in late 1941 when she married Clyde B. Bly. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and sent to Fort George Meade in Maryland. Next, he was assigned to Biloxi, Mississippi, where Madge joined him. After his service, the couple moved to the Linton family's farm and Clyde's father-in-law helped him get a job as a railroad fireman for the Richmond Fredericksburg & Potomac Railroad. By 1950, the couple had two sons, Anthony C. and Gary W. Bly. Clyde and Madge stayed in Alexandria until his retirement from the railroad. They moved to Edinburg after that. He is remembered for his lifelong work with horses. Lee was the son of Emery Franklin (1889-1949) and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Sarah (Wisman) (1889-1972) Bushong. He grew up with three brothers on a farm in the Stonewall District of the county. In 1921, 6-year old Lee and his younger brother, Gilbert, survived a harrowing 250-foot fall over a precipice across the river from the Triplett power plant. It occurred when the horse his father was using to pull a wagon up a mountain broke away and ran over the cliff with the wagon and boys attached. The two boys were found badly bruised but alive at the foot of the cliff near the river. They had to be rescued by boat. The newspaper article described the event as “one of the most remarkable escapes in the history of the mountains”. He married Ruth Elizabeth (Clem) (born in Pennsylvania) in July 1935, in Cumberland, Maryland. In the 1940 census, they both lived on State Road 604 (Fairview Road) near Woodstock with Lee’s parents. Lee worked as a stock dealer. Ruth worked as a bookkeeper at a private school. Their marriage did not last and they divorced in 1941. For a time, Lee and two brothers, Gilbert and Forest "Peanut" Bushong, had a ranch in the Snowy Ridge area of Wyoming. Lee was a hunting guide there. He married for the second time in 1942, in Boonesboro, Kentucky. His wife, Bera Maxine (Brosnious) (1917-2010) was born in Kane, Wyoming, the daughter of Joseph J. and Mary (Herren) Brosnious. Lee worked with horses much of his life. He and his wife were known for being avid race horse owners in the Front Royal area. Lee was also a well-known stock man and cattle dealer. His wife bred Limousin Cattle and worked as a teacher and administrator in the Warren County Public School system for 32 years. They did not have children. Lee's last residence was in Hedgesville, West Virginia. Hamaker standing in the studio and wearing an overcoat. John David "J.D." Hamaker is most remembered for his decades long service as a Minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Strasburg and, in his early years, Woodstock. Originally, J.D. was from Snowville, Pulaski County. He was the son of Dr. Michael and Mary Yost (Douthat) Hamaker. He married Florence Jane Meredith in Snowille and the couple had three children: Arthur H., Florence Mae (1873-1941), and Bessie A. (1875-1959). When J.D. was just 16 years old, he joined the Confederacy, and served as a member of the Thirty-sixth Battalion Virginia Cavalry, until the end of the Civil War. The 1870 census for the Wassee Township of Pulaski County found him working as a shoemaker. He and his wife, Florence, had a 1-year old son, Arthur H. By 1880, the family had re-located to the Davis District of Shenandoah County where J.D.’s occupation was “preacher”. He remained in the Strasburg area for the rest of his life. A long obituary published in the Strasburg News on October 14, 1931, referred to him as: “probably the best known and most beloved citizen of Strasburg”. Indeed, he was very involved in the community during the 59 years he served in the ministry of the Disciples of Christ. He was one of the founders and held a life membership in the Virginia Christian Missionary Society; he was a charter member of the American Home Missionary Society; with Dr. Josephus Hopewood he was co-founder of Virginia Christian College (now Lynchburg College), and served a number of terms as a member of the Board of Trustees of that institution. At the time of his death, he was Director of the Pension Campaign of the Disciples of Christ for the State of Virginia. Throughout his life he had been a strong advocate of prohibition, and was a co-founder of the Anti-Saloon League of Virginia. For several years and at the time of his death he was commander of Stover Camp, United Confederate Veterans, and he loved to go to each annual encampment to mingle with the "Boys in Gray." He was an active member of Spurmont Lodge Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons and for a number of years served as Chaplain of the lodge. He was a member of the Board of directors of the Massanutten National Bank, and his associates recognized his “splendid judgment and keen business acumen”. Harding Miller in his U.S. Army uniform. John Harding Miller was born in Mount Jackson, the youngest of the six surviving children of Edward Jackson and Lelia Arbella (Frye) Miller. His father was a blacksmith who died when John was nine, and his mother supported the family during the Great Depression through nursing and midwifery. In 1940, John worked as an attendant in a gas station and lived in Mount Jackson with his widowed mother, sister, uncle, and two cousins. When he registered for the WWII draft in 1942, he lived on Columbia Road in Washington D.C. and worked at the Board of Economic Warfare on ‘Q’ Street. John served in the 22nd Armored Division of the U.S. Army during World War II, and while home on leave met a young schoolteacher, Ethel Mason, to whom he proposed the night they met. She had grown up in Hanover County, Virginia, the daughter of Reverend J. Phillip and Adelaide (Lasley) Mason. After graduating from Madison College in 1943, Ethel moved to Mount Jackson to teach school where she met her husband. The 1950 census found the couple living on Cutshaw Avenue in Richmond, Virginia, where Ethel cared for their 4-year old daughter, Jean, and John Harding worked as a mortgage loan inspector for an insurance company. John and Ethel moved to Roanoke in 1951. He was initially employed by the Prudential Insurance Company. In 1966, he founded a real estate appraisal business which eventually became Miller, Long & Associates, Inc. John Harding Miller and his wife were married for 67 years before she died. They had three daughters, Jean Mason, Anne Stuart (who died as an infant), and Jane Harding Miller. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
