Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. Christian "Bud" Maulsby Borden Subject The topic of the resource Borden, Christian "Bud" Maulsby (1908-1973) Military Officers - United States - Virginia - Shenandoah County Description An account of the resource Portrait photograph of Lt. J.G. Christian "Bud" Borden in his Navy uniform. Bud was from Toms Brook, the son of Christian David (1876-1956) and Alma Marian (Brown) (1878-1954) Borden. His birth was not registered until 1942, when his mother brought to the Circuit Court a bible from 1895 with Bud’s appearance recorded in it. The record noted that the Clerk who accepted the evidence had known Alma Borden “all her life”. He married Lorita Virginia Artlip, a young woman from Roanoke, in 1930. The couple lived in Pulaski, Virginia, where Bud worked for the Continental Life Insurance Company. This marriage did not last. When he registered for the WWII draft in October 1940, Bud lived in Alexandria where he worked for the Virginia State Employment Service. He was described as being 5’11” tall and 157 pounds. His second marriage was to Virginia Fleda Wakeman (1914-1986), from Fishers Hill near Strasburg. Her parents were Omer Lester (1885-1959) and Grace Dorothy (Keller) (1888-1923) Wakeman. The couple married in 1942 in Waynesboro. At that time, Bud worked as a cost accountant and lived in Lorton, Virginia. His bride lived in Woodstock. Soon after, Bud joined the military. He served from July 1942 to October 1946. He continued to serve in the U.S. Navy Reserves into the 1950’s and attained the rank of Lt. Commander. By 1950, Bud and Virginia lived with his parents in Toms Brook. Bud worked at a gas station and Virginia was a primary school teacher. They did not have children. When he died, Bud lived in Fishers Hill near Strasburg where he was a merchant at a store. In this photograph, he is seated on a chair with an open book on his lap. He is best remembered as having organized and help build the Church of the Brethren in Fort Valley. This church is also known as the Dunkers. Elder William Peters was from Powells Fort (Fort Valley), the son of Adam Burner (1802-1865) and Anna (Keller) (1809-1875) Peters. His first wife was Eliza Jane (Clanahan) (1833-1910) who he married in 1852. They had a daughter, Charlotte, together. In both the 1860 and 1870 censuses, the family farmed in Fort Valley. In December 1876, he submitted to the U.S. Government a claim for reimbursement of $20.50 due to the loss of 3500 pounds of good quality Timothy Hay he incurred during “the Rebellion” in March 1862. The record indicated that Banks’ Command was encamped at Woodstock when William Peters’ hay was taken. A receipt was given to him and that, along with testimony by his neighbors, Addison Munch and Alex Clem, swearing that he had opposed secession and was against the Rebel cause throughout the war, were required to prove he was entitled to a reimbursement. The claim was paid out in March 1877. William Peters was also an active member of the Church of the Brethren (Dunkers) Church. By 1877, he was a Bishop and between the years, 1904-1918, “Elder William Peters” was reported many times in the Strasburg News to have preached in the area. Communities including Dry Run, Cross Roads, Oak Hill, White Chapel, Maurertown, Strasburg, and Page County benefitted from his visits. His wife died when he was about 80 years old. Two years later, in 1912, Elder William Peters married Mary Elizabeth McInturff (1845-1935). They had ten years together before he died. The cause of death noted on his death certificate was: “Old age and worn out”. Earl enlisted in the U.S. Army as a private in June 1945, near the end of WWII. Earl was a lifelong Edinburg area resident, the son of Earl E. (1891-1952) and Lena Virginia (Grandstaff) (1896-1960) Wolverton. He had an older sister, Jean L. Wolverton. His father was a carpenter and Earl Jr. worked with him growing up and after his military service. When he married Betty Lou Irwin, in 1948, his occupation was “carpenter’s helper”. Betty Lou (Irwin) Wolverton was the daughter of Brooks Adolph Irwin, Sr. (1895-1967) and Elizabeth Maude (Kirby) (1908-1987) Irwin. She was just 16 years old when she married. The 1950 census found the couple with a 1-year old son, Charles Daniel. The young family was living with his parents and sister in rural Edinburg. His occupation in this record was “farmer”. Earl and his wife had at least two additional children in the years they were together: Sandra Kay and Pamela Sue Wolverton. The name, "Earl Wolverton", is written on the glass plate. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
