Biographical Text Naomi lived in Strasburg, where her husband worked for Viscose until his retirement due to illness. When not caring for him, Naomi spent time creating decorations and baking. The grandmother of six became so talented at baking, that she made a name for herself. In 1973 alone, she baked over 350 cakes. Her cakes included wedding cakes, birthday cakes, and a cake that looked like Toms Brook Elementary School. Biographical Text Nancy, a native of New Jersey, turned her hobby into a business. After buying the Smith farm in 1972, she became passionate about antique collecting. A couple years later, she opened an antique shop in what used to be the farm’s chicken coop. Thanks to her children, Nancy also became interested in horses. Her husband built a horse stall to keep their 19 horses, with one of them being an Arabian Stallion. Title A name given to the resource Cleda Orndorff Conner Subject The topic of the resource Conner, Cleda Orndorff (1888-1985) Women-Virginia-Shenandoah County Description An account of the resource Photograph of Cleda Orndorff Conner. Published in the Shenandoah Herald on May 20, 1969 as part of their "Country Kitchens" series. Cleda Orndorff was born August 9 1888 in Zepp Virginia where she would live her entire life. In 1915 she married Grover Cleveland Conner, a farmer in the community. They had one daughter, Annabelle Conner, and three sons Willard, Marshall, and Joseph. Cleda worked hard during her farm life raising animals, canning, making her own butter, and baking bread among other things. In a 1969 Shenandoah Herald article she stated "Lots of hard work, but I enjoyed it." She was also active in the Zepp home demonstration group, having hosted their first meeting in 1934, the Cedar Creek Christian Church, the Christian Women's Fellowship, and the Cedar Creek Community Center. Published in the Shenandoah Herald on April 10, 1969 as part of their "Country Kitchens" series. May Whitaker Rinker was born May 1, 1901 in Shenandoah County. She married Garnett L. Rinker Sr. They had two children Garnett Rinker Jr. and James Rinker. Garnett Rinker Jr. was killed in action on June 6, 1944 while serving with the US Army during the Normandy Invasion. Mary lived on a farm near Woodstock for her entire life. At one time she was known for her butter from five Guernseys cows. She would churn 28 pounds of butter at a time and sell it in one pound blocks. Later in her life she established extensive flower gardens growing peonies, begonias, dahlias, and amaryllis which decorated her home and church. She also sold some of her flowers as a way to support her garden. Mary died on September 8 1982 and is buried in Massanutten Cemetery in Woodstock. Published in the Shenandoah Herald on June 26, 1969 as part of their "Country Kitchens" series. Esther was born April 18, 1911 to Barney and Katie Virginia Foltz. She married Raymond F. Miller on February 23, 1929 in Hagerstown Maryland. Esther lived in Edinburg Virginia. She worked with her husband in the family's printing business. Her primary role was as bookkeeper, but she also ran the printing press. Outside the printing shop which opened in 1955, Esther was a cafeteria worker at the Edinburg School. She started as a cook and retired as the kitchen manager in 1967. She observed "for some children the meal at school was the only meal they had the entire day." Esther and her husband lived on the east side of Edinburg. There they raised their niece Sandra Orndorff. Esther died in 1990 and is buried at Cedarwood Cemetery.
