Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Title A name given to the resource Bachelor Girls Club Subject The topic of the resource New Market (Va) Description An account of the resource This photograph shows the members of New Market’s “Bachelor Girls Club.” It was most likely taken sometime between 1870 and 1890. Almost nothing is known about this organization. After the Civil War the male population in the South had been decimated. Many women never married so the culture had to shift to accommodate a large body of unwed females. Organizations like this were prevalent and provided women who could not find husbands with social outlets. Some sources indicate this photograph shows the girls before a Halloween party. Hosting events such as that would have certainly been in line with the group’s mission. What we do know is these costumes were most likely recycled from KKK outfits. While it is almost impossible to prove this fact, the similarities are striking and most researchers tend to back this conclusion based on what evidence exists. The Klan was certainly active in the county during this period. A major KKK parade, which had hundreds of participants, occurred in New Market in 1870. Local politicians and community leaders either directly supported the organization, or at least backed its ideals. Since the organization promoted “proper” behavior for women a connection with the Bachelor Girls Group is certainly feasible. Though no official Klan records show a local group existed, newspaper accounts show the Klan’s local activities would continue through the 19th and first half of the 20th century. During the 1920s and 1930s regular regional KKK meetings were held at Shenandoah Caverns. Thousand of Klansmen attended with support from local businessmen and KKK members, to promote their views. As late as the 1960s crosses were still being burned in the area as part of their rituals. Today public support in Shenandoah County is decidedly against the Klu Klux Klan or any organization that promotes similar beliefs. However, these groups do make their voices heard on occasion and remind us that they continue to exist in our society. Wayland's Head Subject The topic of the resource Wayland, John Walter (1872- 1962) Description An account of the resource Photograph of Dr. John W. Wayland, but showing only the back of his head. He is best remembered as the author of several books on the history of Shenandoah County. John Walter Wayland was born in Woodlawn, in the southwestern part of Shenandoah County, Virginia. He graduated from Bridgewater College in 1899 and in 1907 he received a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. Dr. Wayland helped organize, and was one of the first faculty members at, the State Normal School in Harrisonburg, Virginia, which later became Madison College, and is presently James Madison University. He taught there until 1931. He also taught at various times at Bridgewater College, University of Virginia and University of Tennessee. He taught History and Social Science and was the department head while at the State Normal School. During his lifetime, Dr. Wayland published over thirty books. Locally, he is well-known for his Shenandoah County histories, however, he also authored "A History of Rockingham County", "How to Teach American History" and "A History of Virginia for Boys and Girls", among others. Besides writing books, he wrote the lyrics to the song "Old Virginia", set to music by Will H. Ruebush. He married Mattie Virginia Fry and they had two sons. He died at age 89, while shoveling snow. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. Barbara was the daughter of Harold Leslie and Nannie Rebecca (Seal) Bowman. She was a 1979 graduate of Central High School. When she died, she was the client services director at the Shenandoah County Pregnancy Center in Edinburg. Before that, she was employed as a nurse's aide at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital and worked at Walton and Smoot Drug Store and Cracker Barrel. Her husband was Darryl L. Huffman. The couple had two daughters, Emily Kathryn Huffman and Lindsey Renea Huffman. She is buried in Woodstock, Virginia.
