Billy Plauger was from Fort Valley, one of three sons born to Joseph Franklin (1839-1931) and Catherine (Peters) (1839-1901) Plauger. His father was a teacher in Seven Fountains and when he died, the Roanoke Times newspaper reported that Billy’s father was the “last surviving eyewitness to the shooting of General “Stonewall” Jackson at the Battle of Chancellorsville”. In 1890, Billy Plauger married Amanda Leah McInturff, also from Fort Valley. She was the daughter of Jacob S. (1820-1883) and Leah (Veach) (1827-1905) McInturff. Together, Billy and Amanda farmed in the Seven Fountains area and raised five children: Ashby, Annie M., Charles, Minnie B. and George. In 1900, Amanda’s mother lived with them. Their farm was next to Billy’s parents and brother, George. At the time of his death, Billy’s occupation was listed as “Government Fire Warden”. On Amanda’s gravestone is carved: “She was the sunshine of our home”. Both are buried in the Plauger Cemetery in Detrick, Fort Valley. He attended Roanoke College where his picture appeared in the 1937 and 1938 yearbooks. When he registered for the WWII draft in 1940, he lived in North Carolina and his employer was the “Public Service Co. of N.C.” His father was listed as his emergency contact. The record described him as being 5’11” tall and 145 pounds. Ralph enlisted in the Army in January 1942. Ralph married Martha Lee (Baldwin) (1919-1978) just after the war, in February 1946. She lived in Maurertown, the daughter of Warren and Annie (Borden) Baldwin. The 1950 census found the couple living with Ralph’s widowed mother on the east side of Route 11 in Toms Brook. Ralph worked as a bank cashier and they had two young children, Roy Baldwin and Marilyn Kay. A third child, Ralph Miley, Jr., was born after the census was taken. Ralph and his wife moved to Winchester at some point. When Ralph died, their home was on S. Braddock Street and Ralph was a bookkeeper. He was buried in Toms Brook. Kotsianas Subject The topic of the resource Kotsianas, James G. (1886-1956) Description An account of the resource Portrait photograph of James G. Kotsianas. A native of Kalesmenon, Greece, James was the proprietor of the New York Restaurant on Court Square in Woodstock, Virginia, from 1922-1947. He was known locally as “Jimmy the Greek”. We are unsure of the year that James first immigrated to the United States, but by August 1929, he had a U.S. passport indicating he was already a naturalized citizen. He made trips back to Greece when he could because his wife and children still lived there. His wife was Konstando (Ligdis) Kotsianas. She was the daughter of a Greek Orthodox Priest, Father George Ligdis. The couple’s two youngest sons, Theophanis (Frank) and John, were conceived during these home visits. James brought his oldest son, George, a 16-year old student, back to the United States with him in 1934. He had a daughter, Evanthia, as well. James first opened the restaurant in Woodstock in 1922 and it was located in the Locke building in its early days. Then, it was moved across the street and into the old Holtzman Hotel building where it remained and operated until it closed. In 1929, a partnership was formed between James Kotsianas, Pete Blentson (who may have been his cousin), George Pappas (who may have been related to Pete’s wife), and two other Greek men. The 1930 census in April found all five living together on Main Street and working as waiters in a restaurant. Over the years, James’s partners were bought out and by 1938, he and “Chef” Bentson were the sole proprietors of the popular restaurant. James returned to Greece shortly after the Italians invaded Greece in 1940. Local newspapers reported that he went back to fight for Greece and was captured there. We do not know much about his years there, but he was probably unable to return to the U.S. until after the war ended. During James’s absence, his son, George, remained in the U.S. and became a U.S. citizen and registered for the WWII draft during this time. After he graduated from Massanutten Military Academy (MMA), he continued to help operate the New York Restaurant. James returned to the United States in 1946. When he arrived in New York, he brought his wife, “Konstante”, 19-year old son, “Theophanis”, and his youngest, 16-year old John. Their final destination was Knoxville, Tennessee, however, the family first went to Woodstock where his son, Frank, attended Massanutten Military Academy for at least a year. James sold his share of the New York Restaurant to his partner, Pete Blentson, in 1947. James and his family then moved to Knoxville, Tennessee. He spent his last years in Knoxville, his family around him, where he operated “The Garden” Restaurant with his oldest son, George “Consin”. When he died, it was reported that his mother and sisters were still in Greece. Relation A related resource James G. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
