Charles grew up in Woodstock, the son of Thomas Hottel Fravel (1890-1949) and Cary (Funkhouser) (1881-1945) Fravel. In 1940, he worked as an assistant to mortician, V.L. Dellinger. When he registered for the WWII draft, he was still there. He was described as being 6 ft. tall and 140 pounds. He enlisted after high school and served in the U.S. Army as a Private 1st Class from April 1942 to August 1945. In November 1942, while in the Army, he married Mabel Virginia Fansler (1921-2012), in Woodstock. Mabel was from Orkney Springs, the oldest daughter of Boyd Ashby and Edna Blanche (Estep) Fansler. She was a graduate of Triplett High School in Mount Jackson, Virginia. Before marrying she worked at Shaver's Restaurant in Woodstock, from 1940 until 1942 and then at Wender's Department Store from 1942 until 1944. The 1950 census found Charles and Mabel living in Nashville, Tennessee. They had a 6-year old son, Charles, with them. Their daughter, Deborah Cay Fravel, was born five years later. In 1951, the family moved to Arlington, Virginia, where Charles worked as an undertaker. They retired to Basye in 1983. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Wilkins, his wife Emeline (Helsley) Wilkins, and other family members with a cow and her twin calves in the foreground at “Sunnyside Farm” dated July 20, 1910. Rufus Albert Wilkins owned and worked this farm on what became Moose Road north east of Woodstock Virginia. Rufus married Emeline Helsley (1878-1934) in 1900. The couple had nine children. Two of his sons, Willie and Ray, had a milk route in Woodstock that used the Sunnyside Farms name. The identities of the woman on the right of the image and the names of the children shown are unknown. Seated in front are Lulu Ellen (Doll) and William "Bud" Luther Golladay. Standing, (l to r) are: Dorothy Neeb, Ann Rebecca, and Charlotte Virginia Golladay. William L. Golladay was the son of Samuel C. and Caroline (Neeb) Golladay of Woodstock. His wife, also from Woodstock, was the daughter of George L. and Martha (Orndorff) Doll. They married on February 3, 1914, just before the start of World War I. The couple had three daughters together and in the 1930 census, the family lived in Mt. Rainier, Prince Georges County, Maryland. Bud worked as a carpenter. Twenty years later, the 1950 census found Bud and Lulu only on a farm in the Woodstock area. Dorothy Neeb Golladay married Charles Clifton Sacrey (1914-1989). Both are buried in Arlington National Cemetery where Charles's tombstone indicates he was in the U.S. Navy. Ann Rebecca Golladay married Eugene Brook Gardner (1926-2014) in 1951. Together, they had a son, Timothy Patrick Gardner (1956-1989). The youngest daughter, Charlotte Virginia Golladay, lived in Rappahannock County at the end of her life where she left a legacy of community service and involvement. As a toddler, when the family lived in Maryland, Charlotte participated in Easter Egg Roll when Herbert Hoover occupied the White House. But, the family returned soon after to Woodstock, where Charlotte developed the reputation for being the "tomboy" and was often found milking cows or driving hay wagons on the family farm just west of Woodstock. In 1945, she graduated from Woodstock High School and went to Lynchburg College, where she majored in music. There she met Paul Andrews Nichols (1926-1996), whom she married in 1953. The couple had three sons and many grandchildren and great grandchildren when she died.
