In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Irvin Lewis (some records say “Louis”) was the son of Azariah “Asa” Weston (1896-1987) and Effie Virginia (Nicholson) (1901-1985) Burner. His father worked at a sawmill. Irvin had an older sister, Thelma Virginia (Burner) Wolverton (1919-2019), and at least 3 younger brothers, Carroll C. (1927-1913), Beverly Derwood (1930-1995), and Everett Harold (1935-2021) Burner. The 1940 census found the family living on Palmyra Road in the Madison District. When Irvin registered for the WWII draft, he lived in Edinburg and worked for Angelo Bowman. He enlisted in the Army in September 1943 and served as a Private until his honorable discharge in January 1946. He married Pollyanna Oden in 1948. Polly was the daughter of Paul Henry and Robbie Louise (Ryman) Oden. When they married, Irvin worked as a farmer and Polly lived in Mount Jackson with her parents. The 1950 census found the couple living in the Ashby District of Shenandoah County where Irvin worked as a truck driver for a retail fertilizer plant. They had a 1-year old daughter by then, Brenda A. Burner. At least two additional children came later. When Irvin died, he was listed as a retired truck driver for a feed mill. Both Irvin and Polly are buried together in Mount Jackson. He grew up on his parents’ farm and married in 1942 just before he entered the military where he served for four years. His wife was Florence Sidney (Miller) Sibert (1918-2014), born in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, to Milton Frederick (1890-1962) and Mabel Virginia (Reinhart) (1897-1951) Miller. After his military service Joseph returned to Toms Brook where he spent his life farming. The couple was married over 50 years when Joseph died. Both he and his wife are buried in the Mt. He served in the US Army during the Second World War fighting in the North Africa and Italian campaigns. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
