Seated in front are William "Bud" Luther Golladay, his daughter, Charlotte Virginia Golladay, and his wife, Lulu Ellen (Doll). Standing, (l to r) are: Ann Rebecca and Dorothy Neeb Golladay. William L. Golladay was the son of Samuel C. and Caroline (Neeb) Golladay of Woodstock. His wife, also from Woodstock, was the daughter of George L. and Martha (Orndorff) Doll. They married on February 3, 1914, just before the start of World War I. The couple had three daughters together and in the 1930 census, the family lived in Mt. Rainier, Prince Georges County, Maryland. Bud worked as a carpenter. Twenty years later, the 1950 census found Bud and Lulu on a farm in the Woodstock area. Their daughters had grown and gone. Dorothy Neeb Golladay married Charles Clifton Sacrey (1914-1989). Both are buried in Arlington National Cemetery where Charles's tombstone indicates he was in the U.S. Navy. Ann Rebecca Golladay married Eugene Brook Gardner (1926-2014) in 1951. Together, they had a son, Timothy Patrick Gardner (1956-1989). The youngest daughter, Charlotte Virginia Golladay, lived in Rappahannock County at the end of her life where she left a legacy of community service and involvement. As a toddler, when the family lived in Maryland, Charlotte participated in Easter Egg Roll when Herbert Hoover occupied the White House. But, the family returned soon after to Woodstock, where Charlotte developed the reputation for being the "tomboy" and was often found milking cows or driving hay wagons on the family farm just west of Woodstock. In 1945, she graduated from Woodstock High School and went to Lynchburg College, where she majored in music. There she met Paul Andrews Nichols (1926-1996), whom she married in 1953. The couple had three sons and many grandchildren and great grandchildren when she died. Barbara was the daughter of Russell and Virginia (Seal) Hollar. She grew up in Shenandoah County, and later majored in History at Radford College, graduating in 1958. She met her future husband while they were both working for Deco Electronics in Cambridge, MA. They moved to Belmont, Massachusetts, where Barbara stayed for most of her adult life. She and her husband had a son, Stuart, and a daughter, Ellen. Following retirement, she and Bob traveled extensively in Europe and Asia. Barbara struggled with Parkinson's Disease in the years before her death but enjoyed the support of her community and church in Belmont throughout her last years. Charles was born in Woodstock to Thomas Hottel (1890-1949) and Nettie Cary (Funkhouser) (1881-1945) Fravel. Mabel was born in her family's home in Basye, Virginia, the oldest daughter of the late Boyd Ashby Fansler and Edna Blanche (Estep) Fansler. Edna was a graduate of Triplett High School in Mount Jackson, Virginia. Before marrying she worked at Shaver's Restaurant in Woodstock, Virginia from 1940 until 1942 and then at Wender's Department Store in Woodstock, Virginia from 1942 until 1944. In November 1942 she married Charles M. Fravel. He served in the Army as a Private 1st Class during WWII. In 1951 the couple moved to Arlington, Virginia where Charles worked as an undertaker. They retired to her family home in Basye in 1983. The couple had one surviving son, Charles A. Fravel, when they died. His hat shows the "50 mission crush", a telltale sign of a missing stiffener. Normally, this cap had stiffeners – a support piece behind the cap device and a wire around the inside top perimeter to maintain the cap's round shape. However, since pilots wore headsets over their caps during flights, they would remove the wire stiffener to make headset wear more comfortable, causing the sides of the caps to become crushed. Eventually, the caps retained their floppy "crushed" look, giving the pilot who wore it the look of a seasoned veteran, like in this photograph. The crush cap identified its wearer as an experienced pro, and was as much a part of his identity as his leather flight jacket. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. Alfred Holsinger was born in Timberville, Rockingham County, the third child of John L. (1885-1976) and Anna Mary (Yates) (1887-1966) Holsinger. He married Bessie Irene Lambert (1918-2002) in Harrisonburg in March 1939. Bessie was from Edinburg, the daughter of William Franklin and Mary Lottie (Painter) Lambert. Alfred worked as an electrical operator when the couple first married. When he registered for the WWII draft, Alfred worked for the Northern Virginia Power Company in Front Royal. He was described as being 5’9” tall and 160 lbs. He and his wife lived in Edinburg. Ten years later, the 1950 census found him and his wife living on S. Main Street in Woodstock where he worked as a Fireman at the American Viscose Corporation (later known as Avtex Fibers) in Front Royal. His wife was home with their three sons: Alfred Jr., Barrie L, and Darryl J. Alfred still lived in Woodstock when he died. It appears he went back to working for the power company at some point because his death certificate listed his occupation as a retired supervisor of “Western Union Power House”.
