Kotsianas Description An account of the resource Portrait photograph of James G. Kotsianas. A native of Kalesmenon, Greece, James was the proprietor of the New York Restaurant on Court Square in Woodstock, Virginia, from 1922-1947. He was known locally as “Jimmy the Greek”. We are unsure of the year that James first immigrated to the United States, but by August 1929, he had a U.S. passport indicating he was already a naturalized citizen. He made trips back to Greece when he could because his wife and children still lived there. His wife was Konstando (Ligdis) Kotsianas. She was the daughter of a Greek Orthodox Priest, Father George Ligdis. The couple’s two youngest sons, Theophanis (Frank) and John, were conceived during these home visits. James brought his oldest son, George, a 16-year old student, back to the United States with him in 1934. He had a daughter, Evanthia, as well. James first opened the restaurant in Woodstock in 1922 and it was located in the Locke building in its early days. Then, it was moved across the street and into the old Holtzman Hotel building where it remained and operated until it closed. In 1929, a partnership was formed between James Kotsianas, Pete Blentson (who may have been his cousin), George Pappas (who may have been related to Pete’s wife), and two other Greek men. The 1930 census in April found all five living together on Main Street and working as waiters in a restaurant. Over the years, James’s partners were bought out and by 1938, he and “Chef” Bentson were the sole proprietors of the popular restaurant. James returned to Greece shortly after the Italians invaded Greece in 1940. Local newspapers reported that he went back to fight for Greece and was captured there. We do not know much about his years there, but he was probably unable to return to the U.S. until after the war ended. During James’s absence, his son, George, remained in the U.S. and became a U.S. citizen and registered for the WWII draft during this time. After he graduated from Massanutten Military Academy (MMA), he continued to helped operate the New York Restaurant. James returned to the United States in 1946. When he arrived in New York, he brought his wife, “Konstante”, 19-year old son, “Theophanis”, and his youngest, 16-year old John. Their final destination was Knoxville, Tennessee, however, the family first went to Woodstock where his son, Frank, attended Massanutten Military Academy for at least a year. James sold his share of the New York Restaurant to his partner, Pete Blentson, in 1947. James and his family then moved to Knoxville, Tennessee. He spent his last years in Knoxville, his family around him, where he operated “The Garden” Restaurant with his oldest son, George “Consin”. When he died, it was reported that his mother and sisters were still in Greece. He was born in New Market to George and Ann (Clinedinst) Calvert and was a descendant of the Calvert family of Maryland. He came from a large family but never married. Census data place him living in Richmond by 1900-1910. After that, he lived in Philadelphia, then Georgia, for a time. Eventually, he moved back to New Market and by 1940, he had been renting his home there for at least five years and worked in a bank there. She grew up in Strasburg and was the daughter of the late Ralph B. and Eula E. Crabill. Gloria graduated from Strasburg High School and Winchester Business College. She was employed as a secretary at U.S. Civil Service Commission in Washington, D.C. and Atlantic Research Corporation in Alexandria, Virginia, before getting married. She was a member of Macedonia United Methodist Church. Her first marriage to Augustus "Gus" Noll Horan, in 1946, ended in divorce. Gloria married J. B. Johnson, Jr. on June 18, 1954, in Arlington, Virginia. He preceded her in death in 2002. When she died, her obituary noted she left behind a daughter, Heather Karyn Johnson, and two sons, Tracy Johnson and Noll Horan. (ca 1927-1989)) Description An account of the resource Portrait photograph of Colleen Fisher of Strasburg when she was a young woman. Colleen M. Fisher was born in Strasburg to George Ruford and Priscilla Irene (Ogden) Fisher. She appeared as a 3-year old in the 1930 census, living on East Washington Street with her parents, grandfather and uncle. Her father worked as a meat cutter in a grocery store at that time, but other records note he worked for the Southern Railway Company in various jobs throughout his life. By 1940, however, Colleen’s situation had changed and she lived with Frank J. and Mary E. Stover on Massanutten Street where she was listed as Frank’s “great-niece”. Her parents were still living but lived apart from her and each other in the Strasburg census. Her mother, afflicted with tuberculosis, was on North Street while her father lodged with Casper and Pearl Yates on E. Washington. Tragically, her mother died in 1943, just before major breakthroughs were made in the treatment of TB. Her father died of a heart attack a few years later, in 1948. Colleen was about 16 years old when her mother died and about 21 when she lost her father. She died in 1989 in Falls Church, VA. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
