In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. <text>In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer.

Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives.

In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized.

This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs.

Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028.

<text>Drawing of Burner's Springs Resort, also known as Shenandoah Springs, in Fort Valley Virginia. The resort was constructed in "bowl-like hollow" that was surrounded by seven fountains. Six were within one acre of the resort but the seventh was piped in using wooden logs. The hotel was three stories and 100ft x 40ft. There were also several detached cottages, bathhouses, and pavilions. Construction was done by local carpenters and slaves. The resort was very popular but owner, Noah Burner, suffered from financial difficulties through the 1850s. In 1859 the ownership transferred to Solomon McInturff who changed the name to the Seven Fountains Resort. It closed sometime after the end of the Civil War. </text>

Burton was from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, one of five children born to Jacob William (1874-1948) and Mabel (Blough) (1874-1948) DeChant. His father worked for the Blough Manufacturing Company in 1920 and 1930.

After he graduated from Massanutten Military Academy in 1927, Burton went to Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. His name appeared as part of the Freshman class in the 1929 yearbook.

He married Jacqueline Alice (Neblett) (1913-1979) Dechant in New Jersey in 1935.

The couple lived first in Concord, PA, where, in 1940, Burton worked as a runner in a paper company.

Sometime after that, the couple moved to Florida where they remained for the remainder of their years together. They raised three children: Burton F. Jr., Richard J., and Jacqueline “Dutchess” De Chant.

Burton served in the U.S. Army as a Sergeant from 1944 to 1946.

Apart from his military service, Burton worked as a funeral director at Wilhelm Thurston Funeral Home in St. Petersburg for many years, retiring in 1974.

His obituary noted he was a member of the Massanutten Alumni Association when he died.

His obituary noted he was a member of the Massanutten Alumni Association when he died.</text>

George William Smith (1900-2000) was an African American citizen of the town of Woodstock who was noted for his collections, including many items rescued from the trash. He lived on Water Street and attended Mt. Zion Methodist Church in Woodstock. Smith is buried at the Riverview Cemetery in Woodstock.

Two hundred and seventy nine of the rescued photographs that are part of this collection were taken and/or processed by Woodstock photographer Hugh Morrison.

An amateur photographer, George Smith took hundreds of photographs of the town during the 1980s and early 1990s for his amusement. These images are available at the Shenandoah County Library but have not yet been digitized. </text>

</text>
