At that time, Charles worked for the Town of Woodstock (in the Public Works Department). Over the years they raised three children: Melissa Jane, Michael Charles, and Allen Samuel Gochenour. At the time of his death, Charles' obituary noted he was a graduate of Central High School and a trustee of St. John's United Church of Christ in Hamburg. He also maintained Mahogany Grove Farm, operated his own auctioneer business, and served as President of the Shenandoah County Fair for many years. He was active in many other initiatives in the community as well. This photograph appeared in the 1927 Massanutten Academy yearbook titled, “The Adjutant”. He was the Chief Engineer at Massanutten Military Academy for thirty years, retiring in 1945 due to health issues. Born near Mount Jackson, Charles was a son of James and Mary (Miller) Lutz. His wife was Anna “Annie” Barbara (Barb) Lutz (1875-1949). They married in 1892. He lived in Woodstock for 35 years before he died. When his obituary was published in the Northern Virginia Daily on 13 December 1948, the article noted that Charles Thomas Lutz was known to his wide circle of friends as “Pappy Lutz”.
