George William Smith (1900-2000) was an African American citizen of the town of Woodstock who was noted for his collections, including many items rescued from the trash. He lived on Water Street and attended Mt. Zion Methodist Church in Woodstock. Smith is buried at the Riverview Cemetery in Woodstock. Two hundred and seventy nine of the rescued photographs that are part of this collection were taken and/or processed by Woodstock photographer Hugh Morrison. An amateur photographer, George Smith took hundreds of photographs of the town during the 1980s and early 1990s for his amusement. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. They were the two oldest children of George Henry (1867-1952) and Wilda M. (Boehm) (1877-1939) Riffee. Chester married Stella Ellen (Ryman) (1907-2007), daughter of the late Charles Luther and Ruth (Shipp) Ryman. Both were members of St. Luke Brethren Church near Woodstock and stayed in that area their entire lives. The couple had seven children, five sons and two daughters. In 1946, Katherine Virginia Riffee married Ray Allen Emswiller (1915-1982), a meat cutter living in Washington D.C. He had been born in Shenandoah County to Marion Franklin and Dunnie (Hollar) Emswiller and had a son from a prior marriage. The 1950 census found her living on 8th Street in Washington D.C., with her husband who was still working as a butcher. The couple had a daughter, 2-year old Rachel, in this record. Decades later, widowed Katherine lived on Willow Street in Falls Church, Virginia, when she died. Her daughter, Rachel Young, acted as the informant on the death certificate. Starting in the early 20th century they became popular forms of communication. Over the next few decades the became primarily associated with tourism as visitors regularly used them to highlight places they had visited. This particular card was an advertisement for the Chicken in the Rough Restaurant which specialized in fried chicken, shoestring potatoes, rolls, and honey. It was located just north of New Market. Though they were cheaply produced and often damaged after being sent long distances, many people collected them because they included pictures and bright images. Today postcards no longer attract the same amount of attention they once did. However, historic postcards give us the ability to learn about communities by highlighting what places people liked to visit and what sites local communities valued and hoped to promote. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
