Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Peggy Gene Sousa Carpenter was born in Woodstock Virginia to parents Felix Luis Sousa (1896-1988) and Mildred (Ramey) Sousa (1907-2001). She lived in Staunton for a time when she was a girl and graduated from that city’s Robert E. Lee High School in 1949. After high school, Peggy moved to Winchester and attended nursing school before working at Winchester Memorial Hospital. In the 1950 census she lived in the hospital’s nurses’ boarding house. In February 1951, she married John Andrew Anderson Jr. of Winchester. They had a daughter together, Barbara (Anderson) Funk, but they divorced in 1970. At that time Peggy was working at a surgical clinic in Winchester and living in that city. After her divorce, Peggy returned to Woodstock. In 1973 she married Frank Strother Carpenter, Jr. and remained married until his death in 1994. Peggy is buried with Frank in Berryville Virginia. Samuel was born and raised in Lexington, Virginia, the son of Clayton Eppes Williams (1890-1968) and Willie Joe (Tompkins) (1889-1965) Williams. His father was the Dean of Washington and Lee University’s School of Law. After graduating from Lexington High School, Samuel’s college studies at Washington and Lee were interrupted by the outbreak of WWII. Samuel enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and served with the 15th Air Force, known as the Black Panthers. He was based in Italy as a B-24 bomber pilot. After the war, he married Andree Louise (Wood) (1924-2013) in 1944, and moved to Baltimore a few years later. There, he started a contracting business that built homes. He also attended night school earning his bachelor’s degree from John Hopkins University and a master’s degree in education from Towson State College. Samuel got out of the building business and went to work as an educator at the St. Paul’s School for Boys in Baltimore County, in 1957. He stayed for 28 years before retiring in 1985. Over the course of his time there, he served as assistant headmaster, head of the Upper School and chairman of the math department. He was head guidance counselor when he retired. He and his wife, also a teacher, spent many years living in Bethany Beach after Samuel retired. His wife, Andree Louise (Wood) Williams, was originally from Fort Thomas, Kentucky. They had three children together: S. Clayton Williams, Jr., Susan (Williams) Copper, and Andree (Williams) Wright. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
