Philip E. was 18 years old when he registered for the WWII draft. He worked for Rust Engineers in Front Royal and was described as being 6’ tall and 165 pounds. He served in the Army as a Private. In 1950, Philip lived on Connecticut Avenue in Washington D.C., when he married Shirley Mae Burrill in September, a young woman from Luray. The couple had two sons together, Philip Edward McAfee, Jr., and Kenneth Roosevelt McAfee. At some point, they moved back to Woodstock and lived at 135 N. Water Street where Philip worked in a restaurant for many years. She was the fifth of eight children born to Warren B. and Lena (Sheetz) French. Soon after, the young couple moved to Orlando, Florida, where he worked as an engineer at Martin Marietta for 42 years. Both he and his wife were actively involved in the Orlando community, and were married 50 years before he died. The couple had four children – Susan, Thomas, Richard, and Margaret. Edna was born in Woodstock, to Charles Luther (1866-1942) and Sarah Catherine (Wisman) (1867-1943) Hoover. Both Ray and Edna lived in Strasburg when they married in September 1930. At that time, Ray worked as a button maker. The couple raised their children, a son, Lewis Donald Tamkin, and a daughter, Reba Marie Tamkin, at 201 S. Massanutten Street in Strasburg. The family attended Strasburg Methodist Church and were active in the community. The Northern Virginia Daily Newspaper mentioned them repeatedly as being involved in church or community activities throughout their lives together. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. John grew up in Edinburg. His father, Hugh Saum (1870-1943) owned and operated a hardware store. John’s mother was Mattie C. (Whitmer) Saum (1873-1961). In June 1928, John married Emma Ella Wagniere (1907-1983) at her family’s home in Cumberland, Maryland. Emma was the daughter of Charles Frederick (1880-1954) and Elizabeth Sophia McMonigle (1887-1973) Saum. Her father had immigrated from Switzerland; her mother had arrived from Scotland. After they married, John and Emma lived with Emma’s parents on William Street in Cumberland. John worked as a salesman in a hardware store. By 1940, the couple lived on Carolina Street, still in Cumberland. By then, they had two young daughters, Ellen and Jean. John was still a salesman in a hardware store. When John registered for the WWII draft, he worked for the W. Bingham Company, a large hardware supplier based in Cleveland, Ohio but operating in many nearby states, including Maryland. Sometime after that, the family moved to Edinburg where the 1950 census found John managing a retail hardware store. He was still there when he died decades later although by then he was noted as having been the “owner of a furniture and hardware store”. Olive graduated from Edinburg High School. Her parents were Harry Edward (1893-1953) and Elsie M. (Coffman) (1892-1971) Grim. In 1930, she was the youngest of four children and her father farmed. Her younger sister, Margaret, was born a year or so later. In January 1948, she married Floyd Eugene Mumaw (1927-1973), born in Columbia Furnace to David L. (1895-1952) and Lena Victoria (Linaweaver) (1904-1993) Mumaw. Floyd had served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947. The couple began their marriage in Aliquippa, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, a town along the Ohio River about 18 miles northwest of Pittsburg. There, Olive looked after their young son, Daryl Eugene, while her husband worked as a “welded tube tester helper” in a steel mill. By the early fifties, the family had moved back to the Edinburg area of Shenandoah County where two additional children, Carolyn Sue and Vickie Lynn Mumaw, were born. Floyd worked for a textile company when he died in his forties.
