Pictured are (l to r): his wife Stella (Argeris) Pappas, his oldest daughter, Evanthia "Eva" Pappas, and George Pappas. George Pappas was the son of Konstantine and Eleni Kotsikakis and was from Evrytanias, Greece, a region of mountains, rivers, and green hills in central Greece. In the 1930 census, George Pappas was one of five Greek men living in Woodstock, Virginia, where they were listed as partners in a restaurant. One of the partners, Pete Blentson, married Rena Pappas, who was George’s sister. George was not yet a US citizen in this record. He married Stella Argeris (born circa 1915) in Chryssou, Greece. He visited when he could. Their oldest daughter, Eva, was born in Marathia, Greece, around 1938. In October 1940, George was listed on the WWII draft registration card for James Kotsianas, as the person who would always know where Kotsianas was. George’s residence was still Woodstock. In February 1942, George registered for the WWII draft himself. His card noted he lived in Pulaski, Virginia, was 44 years old, born in Marathia, Greece (a village in the western part of Evrytania) and was “self-employed”. His emergency contact was John Fuseki. George was described as being 5’4” tall and 140 pounds. George’s wife, Stella and his oldest daughter, Evanthia (Eva), arrived in New York from Piraeus, Greece, aboard the S.S. Marine Carp, on December 1, 1947. The journey by sea took about 2 weeks. Eva was only 10 years old but had a U.S. passport issued in Athens. Her mother travelled with her and was a Greek citizen. Her father, Elias Argeris was left behind in Chryssou, Greece. Pulaski was their final destination. In the 1950 census, the family lived in Pulaski, Virginia, where they raised two daughters: Eva, born ca 1938 in Greece; and Helen Rena Pappas, born ca 1950 in Virginia. He operated a restaurant in Pulaski until his death years later. Stella continued to operate it after he died. She was called "Fanny Lambert" when she was living in Woodstock but became "Cathy" later in her life. Cathy was the youngest of five children born to Clarence and Emma Lou (Jennings) Lambert. She was born and grew up in Woodstock. She married Paul Ewing "Jack" Gorham (1912-1966) in Meigs County, Ohio, in 1946. At that time, he was in the U.S. Army and she was a student. Frances graduated from Ohio State University. She was a teacher and world traveler. She and her husband moved to San Antonio in 1966, where she earned her Masters degree and taught at John Jay High School in San Antonio. She stayed in that community for the rest of her life. Her second husband was Edward Alfred Porter (1927-1982). After he died, she married Richard Herbert Heffernan (1912-1999). When she died, she left behind her son, Richard L. Gorham and his family. Another son, James A. Gorham, had died young. Cathy is buried in Comfort Cemetery in Kendall County, Texas. His WWII draft registration card described him as being 6 feet tall and 180 pounds. He married Helen Blanche (Looney) Wright in 1941. She was born in Craig County, Virginia, to James Madison and Mattie Bell (Starks) Looney. Lee was her second husband. Lee served in the U.S. Army during WWII, from February 1944 to June 1945. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
