United States.Army.Reserve Officers' Training Corps Mitchell, Lionel Clyde "Buddy" (1923-2010) Cadets - Virginia - Woodstock Description An account of the resource Portrait photograph of Lionel Clyde "Buddy" Mitchell wearing his Massanutten Military Academy (MMA) school uniform. The patch on his shoulder indicates he served in the Army ROTC. Buddy spent most of his life in the military as his obituary in the Northern Virginia Daily (December 16, 2010) reported. The excerpt below is from his record on the Find-A-Grave website. He was born in Majestic, KY, but grew up in Edinburg, where his mother worked for the telephone company. He ran away from home in 1938 (about the time of this photograph) to join the Army "to help support the family." He was 15. He caught pneumonia in basic training. The Red Cross contacted his mother. The Army sent him home when they realized he was too young. He rejoined the Army when he was 17 in August 1940. During World War II, he was assigned to the 8th Signal Corps, 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. On D-Day, June 6, 1944 at 12:06 a.m., he jumped behind German lines into Normandy. He saw heavy combat and was awarded two Purple Hearts. After the successful Normandy invasion, the 101st fought its way north through France, Holland and Belgium, where the Germans surrounded the 101st at Bastogne. The heavy artillery bombardment lasted from Dec. 20-27, 1944. "I was never more scared in my life," he once said. He was discharged after the war at Fort Meade, Maryland. When he returned home, he worked at the Sinclair station. He later married Ernestine Coffman (1924-2005), (Virginia Coffman's sister). He re-enlisted into the Signal Corps on Jan. 13, 1948. He soon had a three-year assignment in occupied Germany. He became a commissioned officer in 1952, served a tour in Korea, then retired from the Army in 1964. He worked for Sears for six years in farm and fencing and was the top salesman. He finished his working days as an assistant field director for the Red Cross. Capt. Mitchell left behind his son, Mitch, and daughters, Deborah and Diane Mitchell. By the 1940’s, two of his theaters were in Woodstock: The Uptown Theater in the Hotel Woodstock (aka Holtzman Hotel) which later burned, and the Dalke Theater on Main Street (opened in 1940 and, as of 2026, is still operating as the Woodstock Community Theater). Born in “West Prussia” (now Germany), his parents were Bernard Michael Dalke (1861-1904) and Louise Henriette Schumann (1863-1937). He married Nora Amanda Carroll (1897-1988), the daughter of William and Sarah (Stoner) Carroll. Together, they had a daughter, Elizabeth, and a son, William F. Dalke, Jr. His son later built the Family Drive-In Theater outside Winchester in 1956. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Known as “Lee”, he was the third child born to John William and Edna Florence (Hamrick) Wright. His father farmed. The 1930 census found Lee living on South Water Street with his mother and three of his siblings. Lee worked as a mechanic. Lee’s parents divorced in 1940, after many years of living apart In 1940, Lee worked at the American Viscose Corporation (later, it became Avtex fibers) in Front Royal. His WWII draft registration card described him as being 6 feet tall and 180 pounds. He married Helen Blanche (Looney) Wright in 1941. She was born in Craig County, Virginia, to James Madison and Mattie Bell (Starks) Looney. Lee was her second husband. Lee served in the U.S. Army during WWII, from February 1944 to June 1945. By 1950, Lee was a laboratory technician at the Viscose Plant. He and his wife had a 2-year old daughter, Barbara.
