Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. Bernard was born to Charles Monroe (1864-1937) and Annie Maria (Jones) (1864-1930) Getz. His family lived and farmed near “Moores Store”, Virginia. In 1930, Bernard worked as an electrician and lived in the Lee District with his widowed father, sisters, and two teenaged nephews. Soon after, Bernard married Katharine Frances (Sowers) (1896-1959) Getz. Her parents were Clayton Kile (1865-1939) and Laura (Bushong) (1866-1948) Sowers. In 1940, the census found the couple with two sons, Gene Kile Getz (1932-1982) and Grayson Sowers Getz (1935- ). The family lived on Route 11 in the Ashby District of Shenandoah County and Bernard was still an electrician. When he registered for the WWII draft, Bernard lived with his wife in Mount Jackson where he was “self-employed”. The draft card noted he had a “defective arm and hand”. He was described as being 5’11” tall and 200 pounds. Both Bernard and his wife are buried in Forestville.
