He was a lifelong Shenandoah County resident from rural Woodstock. Floyd was the youngest of four children born to Jacob Otis and Nellie Catherine (Miller) Hoover, a farming family from the Woodstock area. In the 1930 and 1940 censuses for the Stonewall District, Floyd and his family lived with his maternal grandparents on their farm. When he registered for the WWII draft, he was described as being 5’7” tall and 136 pounds. After his first year of high school, Floyd enlisted in the military as a Private and served from August 1944 to June 1946. By 1950, Floyd’s grandparents were no longer living but his remaining family still lived at the farm. Floyd had a job as a shipping clerk in a coat factory. He married Mary Alice “Snookie” (Wisman) (1927-2017) Hoover in 1951 in Woodstock. Her parents were Lester Lynn and Eltie (Richard) Wisman. She had attended high school in Alexandria, Virginia. Over their many years together, the couple had a son, Gary H. Hoover, and a daughter, Marilyn (Hoover) Sollenberger. Both Floyd and his wife are buried in Woodstock. Floyd was born in Toms Brook, the first son, third child, of twelve children born to the late Elva Catherine (Senseney) (1902-2003) and Martin Luther (1893-1984) Bauserman. He graduated from Toms Brook High School in 1943, a class of nine girls and nine boys. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving two years, and a lifelong member of the American Legion Post 199 of Woodstock having served as Post Commander and named "Mr. Legionare". After his military service, Floyd returned to his job at the American Viscose Plant (later known as Avtex Fibers) in Front Royal, and stayed there for more than 46 years. He married Joanne Mae Nofsinger in Hagerstown, Maryland, in February 1948. His bride was from Strasburg. In the 1950 census, the couple lived on Sharpe Street in Strasburg and had a 1-year old daughter, Connie J. Bauserman. Floyd worked as a “warper” at the viscose plant. The marriage did not last and they divorced in 1960. Floyd married again, in 1966, to 22-year old Eunice Frances Butler. She had been born in El Reno, Oklahoma, to Lewis Charles and Isabell Frances (Pearson) Butler. Both Floyd and Eunice worked together as “textile workers”. With Eunice, Floyd had two additional children: a son, Scott Lee Bauserman, and a daughter, Karen Leigh (Bauserman) Estep. He retired in from Avtex Fibers in 1989 and, according to his obituary, was well-liked and respected by his co-workers, both men and women. Floyd is buried in Panorama Gardens Memorial Cemetery in Waterlick, Virginia. Title A name given to the resource Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Description An account of the resource In 2018, the Truban Archives began compiling information to create a searchable database of enslaved people in Shenandoah County during the years 1772 to 1865. Under the direction of the archivist, several volunteers pored over various resources to compile spreadsheets of information. The data compiled included the following information (if known): names, names of enslavers, locations related to the person, birthdates, relationships, what happened to them (e.g., emancipation, willed, ran away), the records’ citations, and other notable information. The resources used to discover this information are varied, and all can be found at the Truban Archives. Volunteers examined newspaper clippings and several books, including abstracts of wills, research notebooks, births indexes, and a publication on the history of Edinburg, Virginia. Once the data of several hundred people were assembled, the spreadsheet was uploaded to the digital archives for public consumption. More people will be uploaded as the research progresses. Though much information has been found and made available to the public, unfortunately, Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Collection will never truly be completed. This is due to lost records, including missing newspaper copies and unrecorded information. Because of this, the collection is an ongoing process, with more entries being made as new information is discovered. George William Smith (1900-2000) was an African American citizen of the town of Woodstock who was noted for his collections, including many items rescued from the trash. He lived on Water Street and attended Mt. Zion Methodist Church in Woodstock. Smith is buried at the Riverview Cemetery in Woodstock. Two hundred and seventy nine of the rescued photographs that are part of this collection were taken and/or processed by Woodstock photographer Hugh Morrison. An amateur photographer, George Smith took hundreds of photographs of the town during the 1980s and early 1990s for his amusement. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Title A name given to the resource Ford and Cooley Dairy Bottle Cap Subject The topic of the resource Dairy Woodstock (Va) Description An account of the resource This picture shows a paper milk-bottle cap produced by Woodstock Virginia’s Ford-Cooley Dairy. The dairy was located just south of Woodstock near Narrow Passage. It operated from sometime in the 1930s until around 1960. It would have been used to seal glass milk bottles. These bottles were used to store milk throughout most of the 20th century. Once the milk had been consumed, the bottles would have been returned to the milk producer. Individuals could have purchased their milk at local stores, but most likely they would have had their milk delivered to their house via he local milkman. Many larger dairies offered this service until the late 20th century. Production of the milk that went into these bottles, and other dairy products has been a regular part of Shenandoah County’s economy since cattle were introduced to the United States in the 18th century. Local farmers would have kept milk cows and used their milk, plus the cheese, butter, and cream produced from it, for their family’s personal use. A few entrepreneurs created larger operations to support commercial cheese manufacturing during the middle of the 19th century. One notable cheese factory existed in the Forrestville community. However none of these developed into large scale enterprises or supported a drastic increase in the county’s dairy production. Technological changes occurring at the turn of the 20th century changed this. For the first time milk, and other perishable products could be transported long distances via refrigerated rail cars. Valley farmers began to increase their production of milk and sell the surplus to residents of Washington DC who did not own their own cows. Soon after this farms that raised only milk cows and commercial dairies designed to process this resource emerged. The largest in the area was Valley of Virginia Cooperative Milk Producers Association which was formed in 1926. It produced Shenandoah’s Pride Dairy products until it was sold in 2000. Several other operations, including the Southern Dairy in Woodstock, also operated during the middle part of the 20th century. Today dairy production is conducted by larger, national corporations several of which operate plants in nearby Frederick and Rockingham Counties. Today dairy production continues to be a major part of the county, and the Valley’s economy. Recent reports estimate there are over 1,800 milk cows in Shenandoah County and list the Valley as the state’s top milk producer. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. He was the son of Wade H. and Emma (Crabill) Wright. According to family lore, Louis Morrison took this picture just before Ford left for his WWII military service. When he returned four years later, Louis Morrison still had not made the actual photograph. Ford worked for VEPCO many years. His wife was Mazie Ritenour and the couple had one daughter, Cindy Wright.
