Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. From the Saumsville area, Gilbert was the only child born to Philip Ray (1895-1952) and Stella (Richman) (1897-1922) Coffman. His mother died soon after he was born. Gilbert went to live with his mother’s sister, Ida B. (Richman) Gochenour and her husband, Charles “Charley” W. Gochenour. Gilbert’s father re-married and had additional children with his second wife. In the 1930 and 1940 censuses, Gilbert lived with his aunt and uncle on Saumsville Road east of Maurertown. Both Gilbert and his uncle worked as carpenters in 1940. In February 1942, Gilbert enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He may have started out in the reserves. He served during WWII until his discharge in 1945. His gravestone notes his rank was Staff Sergeant. After the war, the 1950 census found him living in Arlington, Virginia. By then he was married to Neta M. (Racey) Coffman and they had a son, Steven, who was a year old. Gilbert worked as a reception clerk for the Red Cross. Eventually, Gilbert and his wife, Neta, moved back to Maurertown. He is buried in Sunset View Memorial Gardens in Woodstock. He was a lifelong resident of Woodstock. In 1921, Gilbert and his older brother, Lee, survived a harrowing 250-foot fall over a precipice across the river from the Triplett power plant. It occurred when the horse their father was using to pull a wagon up a mountain was spooked by something. The horse broke away and ran over the cliff with the wagon and boys attached. The two boys were found badly bruised but alive at the foot of the cliff near the river. They had to be rescued by boat. The newspaper article described the event as “one of the most remarkable escapes in the history of the mountains”. He was one of four sons of Emery Franklin (1889-1949) and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Sarah (Wisman) (1889-1972) Bushong. Gilbert and his brothers grew up on a farm west of Woodstock on Fairview Road. He was a lifelong resident of Woodstock. In 1921, Gilbert and his older brother, Lee, survived a harrowing 250-foot fall over a precipice across the river from the Triplett power plant. It occurred when the horse their father was using to pull a wagon up a mountain was spooked by something. The horse broke away and ran over the cliff with the wagon and boys attached. The two boys were found badly bruised but alive at the foot of the cliff near the river. They had to be rescued by boat. The newspaper article described the event as “one of the most remarkable escapes in the history of the mountains”. The name, "Bushong", is written on the glass plate of this image. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
