He was one of four sons of Emery Franklin (1889-1949) and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Sarah (Wisman) (1889-1972) Bushong. Gilbert and his brothers grew up on a farm west of Woodstock on Fairview Road. He was a lifelong resident of Woodstock. In 1921, Gilbert and his older brother, Lee, survived a harrowing 250-foot fall over a precipice across the river from the Triplett power plant. It occurred when the horse their father was using to pull a wagon up a mountain was spooked by something. The horse broke away and ran over the cliff with the wagon and boys attached. The two boys were found badly bruised but alive at the foot of the cliff near the river. They had to be rescued by boat. The newspaper article described the event as “one of the most remarkable escapes in the history of the mountains”. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Bud and Virginia (Wakeman) Borden Subject The topic of the resource Borden, Christian "Bud" Maulsby (1908-1973) Military Officers - American - Virginia - Shenandoah County Borden, Virginia Fleda Wakeman (1914-1986) Description An account of the resource Portrait photograph of Christian "Bud" Maulsby Borden wearing his U.S. Navy uniform and posed with his second wife, Virginia (Wakeman) Borden. Bud was from Toms Brook, the son of Christian David (1876-1956) and Alma Marian (Brown) (1878-1954) Borden. His second marriage was to Virginia Fleda Wakeman (1914-1986), from Fishers Hill near Strasburg. Her parents were Omer Lester (1885-1959) and Grace Dorothy (Keller) (1888-1923) Wakeman. The couple married in 1942 in Waynesboro. At that time, Bud worked as a cost accountant and lived in Lorton, Virginia. His bride lived in Woodstock. Soon after, Bud joined the military. He served from July 1942 to October 1946. He continued to serve in the U.S. Navy Reserves into the 1950’s and attained the rank of Lt. Commander. By 1950, Bud and Virginia lived with his parents in Toms Brook. Bud worked at a gas station and Virginia was an English teacher at Strasburg High School. They did not have children.
