Title A name given to the resource Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Description An account of the resource In 2018, the Truban Archives began compiling information to create a searchable database of enslaved people in Shenandoah County during the years 1772 to 1865. Under the direction of the archivist, several volunteers pored over various resources to compile spreadsheets of information. The data compiled included the following information (if known): names, names of enslavers, locations related to the person, birthdates, relationships, what happened to them (e.g., emancipation, willed, ran away), the records’ citations, and other notable information. The resources used to discover this information are varied, and all can be found at the Truban Archives. Volunteers examined newspaper clippings and several books, including abstracts of wills, research notebooks, births indexes, and a publication on the history of Edinburg, Virginia. Once the data of several hundred people were assembled, the spreadsheet was uploaded to the digital archives for public consumption. More people will be uploaded as the research progresses. Though much information has been found and made available to the public, unfortunately, Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Collection will never truly be completed. This is due to lost records, including missing newspaper copies and unrecorded information. Because of this, the collection is an ongoing process, with more entries being made as new information is discovered. This is the same image that appears on page 559 of John W. Wayland's book, "A History of Shenandoah County, Virginia". Green Berry Samuels was admitted to the bar in 1827 and established a legal practice in Woodstock Virginia. He served in the U.S. Congress from 1839-1841 and was a delegate to the Virginia Constitutional in 1850. In 1850, he was appointed Circuit Court Judge for Virginia 14th Circuit and elevated to the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals in 1859. Samuels was married to Maria Gore Coffman on April 12, 1831. They had five children who reached adulthood, Elizabeth, Isaac, Anna, Green Berry Jr., and Samuel. He is buried at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Woodstock. It reflected on the military service of many county residents and the separation that caused during the holidays. As the article notes, many county residents were already serving around the world. The peace time draft, begun in September of 1940, had already called up many residents before the war began. This, combined, other efforts to place the United States on a war footing before Pearl Harbor, and a lack of rationing that would dominate the next several holidays, meant that Christmas in 1941 was not that much different than the one that proceeded it. Even the Shenandoah Herald was relatively the same. News articles still focused on local stories and social events. The issue following Pearl Harbor only included two articles relating to National Defense. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. She was the daughter of Robert Johnston Benchoff, headmaster of Massanutten Military Academy, and Jean (Sine) Benchoff. She graduated from Central High School, Woodstock, Va., and received both a B.M. and an M.M. from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Md. An image similar to these two was used in the 1967 Central High School yearbook because Gretchen, as a Senior, won the DAR Good Citizenship Award that year. From 1974-2002, Gretchen was on the college faculty, the preparatory faculty and was chair of the Music Theory Department at Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. From 1981-2005, she was employed by Dunbar Armored Inc., in Hunt Valley, Md., as vice president of Human Resources. At the end of her career, she worked part-time in a human resource capacity at Towson Pharmacy, Towson, Md. Gretchen never married and was buried in Woodstock, Virginia. From 1974-2002, Gretchen was on the college faculty, the preparatory faculty and was chair of the Music Theory Department at Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. From 1981-2005, she was employed by Dunbar Armored Inc., in Hunt Valley, Md., as vice president of Human Resources. At the end of her career, she worked part-time in a human resource capacity at Towson Pharmacy, Towson, Md. Gretchen never married and was buried in Woodstock, Virginia. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
