Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Grover served from 1942-1945 as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army. He was wounded and received a Purple Heart, awarded for his WWII heroism. After the war, he returned to Zepp where he lived when he married Charlotte Virginia Hyde (1930-1995) in 1948. Charlotte was born in Martinsburg to Braden and Eva Virginia (Reedy) Hyde. When she married Grover, she worked in a garment factory and lived in Woodstock. The couple had two sons, Roger and Carlton Orndorff. As of 2003, both of his sons lived in the Cedar Creek Valley. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. Taken by Mt. Jackson photographer Hoyle Garber, the photograph was most likely used to market the service station when it opened in the late 1940s. Pictured are two unidentified station attendants and Dr. George Parrot of New Market with his automobile. This station was located at the intersection of Routes 11 and 211, two of the region's major highways. Before the introduction of the Interstate Highway System, this area would have been filled with cars travelling to Luray Caverns, Washington DC, and many other points. A gas station here would have certainly been a profitable business. Based on the photograph, the New Market gulf was a full service business that offered car washes, maintenance, parts, and of course, gasoline. The original station design reflects the clean, sleek, art deco design popular in the period. Today, this site continues to serve the community as a gas station, though its name has changed to Liberty and the building is remarkably different. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Benchoff, a well-known instructor and Commandant of Massanutten Military Academy (MMA), in his school's uniform. This photograph appears in the 1927 Massanutten Academy yearbook titled: "The Adjutant". Born in Pennsylvania, he was a son of Loudon Francis and Martha Belle (Johnston) Benchoff. His father was the Superintendent of Schools in Franklin County, Pa. His brother, Howard Benchoff, was the Headmaster of MMA for several decades. He graduated from Franklin and Marshall College and held music degrees from other institutions. During his years at MMA, the cadets affectionately called him, "Major Guy". In his later years, he was the Director of MMA's glee club and choir. He married Katharine (Hottel) Benchoff in 1924 (she was also a teacher at MMA), and together, they raised four children in Woodstock.
