Grover was from Zepp, Virginia, and the youngest of 11 children. His parents were Rhesa A. (1866-1949) and Emma S. (Hill) (1871-1953) Orndorff. His father farmed. Grover served from 1942-1945 as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army. He was wounded and received a Purple Heart, awarded for his WWII heroism. After the war, he returned to Zepp where he lived when he married Charlotte Virginia Hyde (1930-1995) in 1948. Charlotte was born in Martinsburg to Braden and Eva Virginia (Reedy) Hyde. When she married Grover, she worked in a garment factory and lived in Woodstock. The couple had two sons, Roger and Carlton Orndorff. As of 2003, both of his sons lived in the Cedar Creek Valley. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. This photograph was taken during “Gulf Aviation Day” held in Mount Jackson Virginia on August 4, 1935. The event featured “Reynolds and Mason Flying Circus” and was an advertising event sponsored by Burgess Nelson, a Gulf Refining Products distributor. Local newspapers noted the event featured music, comedy, and “thrills.” The event was held in "Wisslers Field" in the area now known as Meems Bottom just south of Mount Jackson. Gulf Oil Company of Mount Jackson (a pre-cursor to Holtzman Oil) was owned by Burgess E. Nelson, a well-known entrepreneur and businessman from Mount Jackson.
