Harold was born in Cedarville, Warren County, and grew up on a farm. He was the fifth child born to William Maury Davison and Maude Eleonor (Funk) Davison. When he registered for the WWII draft in July 1941, he had finished high school and was a school bus driver for Warren County Schools. He enlisted a year later and served until October 1945, after the war had ended. While in the military, he married Gladys A. in 1943 in Hagerstown, Maryland, but they divorced six years later. They had two children. Harold settled in the Strasburg area after his military service and eventually married Gita Rosalie Bly. Together, they had a daughter, Tara Wynne (Davison) Walter. Harold worked at Avtex Fibers near Front Royal for many years, retiring as a sheet metal engineer. When he died of a heart attack at 70 years old, he was buried in Riverview Cemetery, Strasburg. When he registered for the WWII draft in 1942, he lived on Sharpe Street in Strasburg and worked for the American Viscose Corporation (later called Avtex Fibers) in Front Royal. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy a couple of months later. In 1944, while still in the Navy, Harold married Kathleen Rose "Kitty" (Plauger) McFarland. She is shown in this photograph wearing a corsage on her dress. Kitty was from Maurertown and the daughter of Samuel Taylor and Rosie Ella (Click) Plauger. Harold Ritenour was born in Woodstock Virginia on March 25 1925. He served in World War Two with the U.S. Marine Corps. After the war he remained in the reserves and was activated to serve in the Korean conflict. Harold deployed to Korea in 1950 with the 1st Marine Division. On March 3rd, 1951, he was wounded in the shoulder but recovered and returned to Korea. He regularly served on the front lines. After the war, he returned to his wife and children in Woodstock. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. Under the direction of the archivist, several volunteers pored over various resources to compile spreadsheets of information. The data compiled included the following information (if known): names, names of enslavers, locations related to the person, birthdates, relationships, what happened to them (e.g., emancipation, willed, ran away), the records’ citations, and other notable information. The resources used to discover this information are varied, and all can be found at the Truban Archives. Volunteers examined newspaper clippings and several books, including abstracts of wills, research notebooks, births indexes, and a publication on the history of Edinburg, Virginia. Once the data of several hundred people were assembled, the spreadsheet was uploaded to the digital archives for public consumption. More people will be uploaded as the research progresses. Though much information has been found and made available to the public, unfortunately, Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Collection will never truly be completed. This is due to lost records, including missing newspaper copies and unrecorded information. Because of this, the collection is an ongoing process, with more entries being made as new information is discovered.
