Title A name given to the resource Headquarters School Subject The topic of the resource Headquarters (Va) Description An account of the resource In 1891 the Shenandoah County School Board constructed this school near the intersection of what is now Headquarters and Cave Ridge Roads. It was named Headquarters School after the local community which featured a church, stores, and several residences. The building was a typical school of the time. It was a one-story, frame structure with a tin roof and stone foundation. The interior contained a single classroom and two coat rooms with plaster walls, oil lamp, and stove heat. Restroom facilities and water was located outside. Approximately 20 students enrolled in grades 1-7 studied here when the school opened. That number would remain fairly consistent for the next four decades. Students wishing to continue their education after grade seven would have had to attend High School in one of the area towns. Until the early 1930s, this would have required paying tuition and arranging for their own transportation. In 1939 Headquarters School was closed and students were transferred to Edinburg. The building was heavily damaged in 1975 and partially demolished. It is no longer standing. Heber was born near Saumsville, the son of John W. (1870-1966) and Maggie Elizabeth (Spiker) (1867-1945) Wolverton. He grew up on his family’s farm and both the 1910 and 1920 censuses found him there. Heber’s birth was registered late (1942) when a bible (printed in 1884) was shown to the clerk’s office that showed Heber’s entry and date of birth. His father, by then in his eighties, signed the record affirming the information. By 1930, he had been married to Mildred May Hottel (1902-1992) for more than a year. The couple lived with her parents, David Samuel and Lulu Byrd (Hollingsworth) Hottel, on their farm in the Johnston District of Shenandoah County. Heber was a carpenter and worked odd jobs. When Heber registered for the WWII draft, he worked for Dan Burner in Woodstock. Years later, when he died, his employment was as a laborer for a grader manufacturing company. His last residence was in Woodstock. Both he and his wife are buried together in Massanutten Cemetery in Woodstock. Title A name given to the resource Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Description An account of the resource In 2018, the Truban Archives began compiling information to create a searchable database of enslaved people in Shenandoah County during the years 1772 to 1865. Under the direction of the archivist, several volunteers pored over various resources to compile spreadsheets of information. The data compiled included the following information (if known): names, names of enslavers, locations related to the person, birthdates, relationships, what happened to them (e.g., emancipation, willed, ran away), the records’ citations, and other notable information. The resources used to discover this information are varied, and all can be found at the Truban Archives. Volunteers examined newspaper clippings and several books, including abstracts of wills, research notebooks, births indexes, and a publication on the history of Edinburg, Virginia. Once the data of several hundred people were assembled, the spreadsheet was uploaded to the digital archives for public consumption. More people will be uploaded as the research progresses. Though much information has been found and made available to the public, unfortunately, Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Collection will never truly be completed. This is due to lost records, including missing newspaper copies and unrecorded information. Because of this, the collection is an ongoing process, with more entries being made as new information is discovered. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
