Herbert and Violet grew up in Fort Valley, two of at least eight children born to Kemper Clay (1896-1938) and Zola Eugenia (Munch) Powell (1900-1978). When Herbert turned 18 and registered for the WWII draft, his father had already died. Herbert was working for Harry Dinges in the St. David’s region of Fort Valley. He served in the U.S. Army from December 1943 to April 1946 and then re-enlisted for another tour from January 1948 to January 1949. He never married, lived in Luray, and was working as a cook for the U.S. Government when he died. He is buried in the Munch Family Cemetery in Fort Valley. Violet married Chester Emra Bucklew (1913-1988) in July 1948. Chester was born in Kirby, West Virginia, the son of Benjamin Franklin and Alice Virginia (Higgleman) Bucklew. He lived in Strasburg and was a jeweler. This was his second marriage and her first. They had at least one son together, Mark Wayne Bucklew (1952-2022). At some point, Violet and Chester moved to West Virginia where they are buried together in Rock Oak Cemetery, Baker, in Hardy County. Dellinger Subject The topic of the resource Dellinger, Herbert Wilson (1917-20020 Description An account of the resource Photograph of Herbert Wilson Dellinger standing in his U.S. Army uniform with his hands at his sides. He served in the military from January 1945 to February 1946. Herbert was from Strasburg, a son of Arthur Benton and Lydia Margaret (Racey) Dellinger. He married Odie Louise Shiley from Edinburg in 1938. In the 1940 census, Herbert and his wife lived with his family on a farm on Back Road in the Davis District. They had a one-year old daughter, Imogene, by then. Ten years later, the couple still lived on the same farm and had eight children. Herbert worked as a carpenter for a construction company. Both Herbert and his wife are buried in Saint Stephens Cemetery, Strasburg Junction, Shenandoah County. The name, "Herbert Dellinger", is written on the glass plate. Title A name given to the resource Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Description An account of the resource In 2018, the Truban Archives began compiling information to create a searchable database of enslaved people in Shenandoah County during the years 1772 to 1865. Under the direction of the archivist, several volunteers pored over various resources to compile spreadsheets of information. The data compiled included the following information (if known): names, names of enslavers, locations related to the person, birthdates, relationships, what happened to them (e.g., emancipation, willed, ran away), the records’ citations, and other notable information. The resources used to discover this information are varied, and all can be found at the Truban Archives. Volunteers examined newspaper clippings and several books, including abstracts of wills, research notebooks, births indexes, and a publication on the history of Edinburg, Virginia. Once the data of several hundred people were assembled, the spreadsheet was uploaded to the digital archives for public consumption. More people will be uploaded as the research progresses. Though much information has been found and made available to the public, unfortunately, Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Collection will never truly be completed. This is due to lost records, including missing newspaper copies and unrecorded information. Because of this, the collection is an ongoing process, with more entries being made as new information is discovered. (left) and Landon Lee (right) Gochenour. Their parents were William Jonas (1882-1939) and Arbelia (Keller) (1888-1961) Gochenour. The 1940 census for the Stonewall District found Landon listed as the Head of Household. He lived with his wife, Frances Lee Shank, son, Harold, as well as his widowed mother and brother, Herman. Both brothers worked on the farm. Herman married Charlotte Catherine (Kibler) (1924-2000) in Woodstock in March 1942. Her parents were Amon Lee Kibler and Beulah Florence Riffey. By 1950, they had a six year old son, Ronald, and Herman worked in the shipping department of a meat packing plant, perhaps his brother's. Landon is best remembered for owning and operating Woodstock Wholesale Meats and the F&G Supermarket. He and his wife had two sons and three daughters together. Title A name given to the resource Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Description An account of the resource In 2018, the Truban Archives began compiling information to create a searchable database of enslaved people in Shenandoah County during the years 1772 to 1865. Under the direction of the archivist, several volunteers pored over various resources to compile spreadsheets of information. The data compiled included the following information (if known): names, names of enslavers, locations related to the person, birthdates, relationships, what happened to them (e.g., emancipation, willed, ran away), the records’ citations, and other notable information. The resources used to discover this information are varied, and all can be found at the Truban Archives. Volunteers examined newspaper clippings and several books, including abstracts of wills, research notebooks, births indexes, and a publication on the history of Edinburg, Virginia. Once the data of several hundred people were assembled, the spreadsheet was uploaded to the digital archives for public consumption. More people will be uploaded as the research progresses. Though much information has been found and made available to the public, unfortunately, Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Collection will never truly be completed. This is due to lost records, including missing newspaper copies and unrecorded information. Because of this, the collection is an ongoing process, with more entries being made as new information is discovered. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman.
