She was the daughter of Melvin "Doc" and Rosie (Grim) Kipps and grew up in Shenandoah County. She met her husband, Jack Geist,, when he was visiting the area with friends. Hilda and Jack were married in 1944 during his service as a C-47 pilot in the Army Air Corps during WWII. After the war, they lived in the Washington, DC area while Jack was attending George Washington University. Later, they moved to Woodstock, VA. Next, they lived at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, for several years while Hilda was working as a draftswoman for the telephone company and Jack was working for the Army Corps of Engineers. They moved to Satellite Beach, Florida, in 1957. Hilda was very active in the PTA, the Officers' Wives' Club at Patrick Air Force Base, in Florida, and in leading Brownie and Girl Scout troops while raising their two daughters, Pam (Geist) Smith and Sandy (Geist) Foxworth. It was taken by an unidentified photographer on April 11 1908. Almost nothing is known about this organization except that it was one of the primary community organizations for African Americans in Strasburg. However, we do know that it was most likely a lodge in the “Pythia Supreme Jurisdiction North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia.” This group had been formed in Richmond Virginia in 1869 after the Knights Pythias had refused to grant black lodges a charter in Virginia. No evidence exists of where the Hill Top Lodge met and no hall is listed on period maps of Strasburg. Toms Brook (Va) World War (1939-1945) Description An account of the resource A collection of images and letters associated with Joseph M. Hines. The vast majority are letters from his time serving with the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater during World War Two. Joseph Martin Hines was born in Toms Brook Virginia on December 1, 1923. His parents were Mary Thelma Borden and Duval “Du” Hines. Duval ran a general store in Toms Brook. Joseph Hines attended Toms Brook High School and graduated in 1941. He was a member of the school band, in which he played the clarinet, and of St. Peters Lutheran Church where he sand in the choir. In 1941 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He trained at Parris Island in South Carolina in 1942. Later that year he was transferred to San Diego and later Hawaii. In 1944 he was part of the invasion force that landed at Iwo Jima. After the war he lived in Arlington Virginia and married Ruby Beaver. He died in 1969.
