She also worked shifts at the hospital and as a private nurse. Irene grew up at Wakeman’s Grove. She had three children, was an active member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, and the Shenandoah County Cancer Society. She also painted and collected flowers while spending time at her cabin home. In June of 1940, he volunteered for active duty in the U.S. Army and served until he retired as a Colonel in 1964. Following his Army retirement, he worked for 15 years in the civil service, mostly as a Security Manager at Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia. Calvin’s wife was Anne Elizabeth (Slater) Wisman (1916-2015). She was born in King William County, Virginia, and was widowed when she married Calvin in 1952. Irvin Lewis (some records say “Louis”) was the son of Azariah “Asa” Weston (1896-1987) and Effie Virginia (Nicholson) (1901-1985) Burner. His father worked at a sawmill. Irvin had an older sister, Thelma Virginia (Burner) Wolverton (1919-2019), and at least 3 younger brothers, Carroll C. (1927-1913), Beverly Derwood (1930-1995), and Everett Harold (1935-2021) Burner. The 1940 census found the family living on Palmyra Road in the Madison District. When Irvin registered for the WWII draft, he lived in Edinburg and worked for Angelo Bowman. He enlisted in the Army in September 1943 and served as a Private until his honorable discharge in January 1946. He married Pollyanna Oden in 1948. Polly was the daughter of Paul Henry and Robbie Louise (Ryman) Oden. When they married, Irvin worked as a farmer and Polly lived in Mount Jackson with her parents. The 1950 census found the couple living in the Ashby District of Shenandoah County where Irvin worked as a truck driver for a retail fertilizer plant. They had a 1-year old daughter by then, Brenda A. Burner. At least two additional children came later. When Irvin died, he was listed as a retired truck driver for a feed mill. Both Irvin and Polly are buried together in Mount Jackson. Swifty Fravel was born in St. Luke near Woodstock to Clarence Cleveland (1886-1947) and Beulah Catherine (Kern) (1885-1973) Fravel, a farming couple. When he registered for the WWII draft, Swifty worked for Howard J. Benchoff in Woodstock. The exact nature of the work was not noted. He was described as being 5’10” tall and 145 pounds. He married Phyllis Mae Long, in Mount Jackson in March 1942. She was the daughter of Homer Allen and Margaret Grace (Barton) Long. At that time, Swifty worked as a hotel manager. The marriage did not last. They were divorced in October 1945. Swifty was still working as a hotel manager. More than 10 years later, in 1957, Swifty married Frances Marie Tice (1926-2022). By then, he worked for the American Viscose Corporation (later became Avtex Fibers) in the engineering department. His bride also worked there as a clerk typist. Frances Marie (Tice) Olinger Fravel was born in Elkton, Maryland, to Linton W. and Eulalie A. (St. Clair) Tice in Cecil County, Maryland. Her family moved to Front Royal in the 1930s. She graduated from Warren County High School in 1944. Swifty Fravel was her second husband. Swifty and Frances enjoyed many years together in Woodstock. The couple had three children: Barbara Elaine, Donna, and James K. Fravel. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Wolverton, Jr. Subject The topic of the resource Wolverton, Irving Keller, Jr. (1931-1976) Description An account of the resource Irving K. Wolverton, Jr. as a young boy wearing shorts and standing by a stuffed toy. Irving was the son of Irving Keller Wolverton (1912-1987) and his first wife, Maxine Althea Coffman (1914-1969). His parents’ marriage lasted about four years. After they divorced, his mother married Carl Walter Laudermilk (1911-1985) in Woodstock in 1936. He was a 24-year old weaver born in Botetourt County and living in Edinburg. Soon after, the new family moved to Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, where Irving grew up. Irving K. Wolverton, Jr. appears in several U.S. Marine muster rolls between 1950 and 1958, first as a Corporal, then as a Sergeant. He was stationed at many places including Parris Island, S.C., Quantico, Virginia, Henderson Hall in Arlington, Virginia, Camp Pendleton, California, and later, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. His brief death notice published in the Plain Dealer (Cleveland) on 9 December 1976 mentioned he had four children: Robert, William, Nancy and Cynthia. He married in his mid-forties (probably for the second time) to Dolores Jean (Covey) Locke (1934-1988). She had divorced her first husband the year before, in 1975. Unfortunately, he and Delores were married less than a year when Irving died unexpectedly in Ohio. Title A name given to the resource Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Description An account of the resource In 2018, the Truban Archives began compiling information to create a searchable database of enslaved people in Shenandoah County during the years 1772 to 1865. Under the direction of the archivist, several volunteers pored over various resources to compile spreadsheets of information. The data compiled included the following information (if known): names, names of enslavers, locations related to the person, birthdates, relationships, what happened to them (e.g., emancipation, willed, ran away), the records’ citations, and other notable information. The resources used to discover this information are varied, and all can be found at the Truban Archives. Volunteers examined newspaper clippings and several books, including abstracts of wills, research notebooks, births indexes, and a publication on the history of Edinburg, Virginia. Once the data of several hundred people were assembled, the spreadsheet was uploaded to the digital archives for public consumption. More people will be uploaded as the research progresses. Though much information has been found and made available to the public, unfortunately, Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Collection will never truly be completed. This is due to lost records, including missing newspaper copies and unrecorded information.
