Blanche was the youngest of six children. Her parents were Noah F. (1847-1927) and Margaret (Basye) (1846-1930) Beedle. Her father had served as a Private in Company K of the Virginia 7th Cavalry Regiment, during the Civil War. Blanche’s early life was like any other. She married Isaac Franklin Ryan (1883-1971) in 1906. He was the son of Edward and Lydia Frances (Walters) Ryan. Isaac worked as a laborer in 1910 and when he registered for the WWI draft in 1918, he was a fireman for the railroad in Brunswick, Maryland, while his wife, Blanche, lived at their home in Mount Jackson. By 1920, Isaac was a shipbuilder in a shipyard and Blanche was caring for three sons: Freeman Lester (1906-1980), Floyd Elmer (1909-1949) and Harry W. (1916-1960). They lived on a farm in the Ashby District. Sometime after 1920, Blanche’s mental health deteriorated and by 1930, when the census found her, she was institutionalized in the “Western State Hospital for the Insane” in Staunton, Augusta County, where she lived for over 30 years. She died, still a patient there, and was buried in Mount Jackson. Her two oldest sons went to live with an Aunt and Uncle in Washington D.C., where they found jobs. The youngest, Harry, was only 12 years old in 1930. He appeared as a “boarder” to Fannie Weaver in the Ashby District of the County and attended school. We were unable to find Blanche’s husband, Isaac, in the 1930 census, but he lived in Washington D.C. in 1942, when he registered for the WWII draft. At that time, he was working for B&O railroad. He lived in Timberville at the end of his life and was a retired railroad worker when he died. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Title A name given to the resource Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Description An account of the resource In 2018, the Truban Archives began compiling information to create a searchable database of enslaved people in Shenandoah County during the years 1772 to 1865. Under the direction of the archivist, several volunteers pored over various resources to compile spreadsheets of information. The data compiled included the following information (if known): names, names of enslavers, locations related to the person, birthdates, relationships, what happened to them (e.g., emancipation, willed, ran away), the records’ citations, and other notable information. The resources used to discover this information are varied, and all can be found at the Truban Archives. Volunteers examined newspaper clippings and several books, including abstracts of wills, research notebooks, births indexes, and a publication on the history of Edinburg, Virginia. Once the data of several hundred people were assembled, the spreadsheet was uploaded to the digital archives for public consumption. More people will be uploaded as the research progresses. Though much information has been found and made available to the public, unfortunately, Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Collection will never truly be completed. This is due to lost records, including missing newspaper copies and unrecorded information. Because of this, the collection is an ongoing process, with more entries being made as new information is discovered. Isaac was born in Slanesville, Hampshire County, West Virginia, to Philip and Diadem (Daughterty) Hockman. In 1878, he married Annetta (Murphy) (1856-1931) in Tomahawk Springs, Berkeley County, West Virginia. The couple met while Isaac was teaching school there. They lived on a farm near Maple Run and had at least nine children of their own in addition to a couple they took in and raised as their own. Isaac was a teacher, a Justice of the Peace, and a staunch Presbyterian during his life. He is buried in Slanesville, West Virginia. Dora Isabel Richman grew up in Maurertown, daughter of the late Walter Elliott (1904-1977) and Lucy Virginia (Richard) (1904-1975) Richman. She was a graduate of Woodstock High School. She married Warren Luther Lambert (1920-1978) in the 1940’s and their first child, Carolyn June Lambert, arrived in August 1948. A son, Richard Warren Lambert followed the following year. In 1950, the family lived on South Commerce Street in Woodstock. Dora did not work and had two small children at home. Her husband worked at a dairy where his job was in the refrigeration part of the operation. When Isabel died, she was a retired nurse from Shenandoah Memorial Hospital in Woodstock. She had also been a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Woodstock. Title A name given to the resource Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Description An account of the resource In 2018, the Truban Archives began compiling information to create a searchable database of enslaved people in Shenandoah County during the years 1772 to 1865. Under the direction of the archivist, several volunteers pored over various resources to compile spreadsheets of information. The data compiled included the following information (if known): names, names of enslavers, locations related to the person, birthdates, relationships, what happened to them (e.g., emancipation, willed, ran away), the records’ citations, and other notable information. The resources used to discover this information are varied, and all can be found at the Truban Archives. Volunteers examined newspaper clippings and several books, including abstracts of wills, research notebooks, births indexes, and a publication on the history of Edinburg, Virginia. Once the data of several hundred people were assembled, the spreadsheet was uploaded to the digital archives for public consumption. More people will be uploaded as the research progresses. Though much information has been found and made available to the public, unfortunately, Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Collection will never truly be completed. This is due to lost records, including missing newspaper copies and unrecorded information. Because of this, the collection is an ongoing process, with more entries being made as new information is discovered. She attended Bridgewater College in the mid-1940's. They lived in Mount Jackson where her husband became an oil dealer, and served as the Mayor of Mount Jackson from 1962 to 1974. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Under the direction of the archivist, several volunteers pored over various resources to compile spreadsheets of information. The data compiled included the following information (if known): names, names of enslavers, locations related to the person, birthdates, relationships, what happened to them (e.g., emancipation, willed, ran away), the records’ citations, and other notable information. The resources used to discover this information are varied, and all can be found at the Truban Archives. Volunteers examined newspaper clippings and several books, including abstracts of wills, research notebooks, births indexes, and a publication on the history of Edinburg, Virginia. Once the data of several hundred people were assembled, the spreadsheet was uploaded to the digital archives for public consumption. More people will be uploaded as the research progresses. Though much information has been found and made available to the public, unfortunately, Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Collection will never truly be completed.
