One record noted he entered service at Hawkinstown in Shenandoah County on April 5, 1862, and had his own horse. A month later, James Hoover transferred to Company K, 12th VA Cavalry. James M. Artz was born in Hardy County, West Virginia, the eldest of at least six children born to James Peter (1845-1920) and Cedena Catherine (Poland) (1857-1950) Artz. He married Lettie Irene Schaeffer in 1905. She was born in Quicksburg and her parents were John Lee (1843-1919) and Alice (Kibler) (1857-1944) Schaeffer. The 1910 census found James and Lettie raising two young children, Lois and John P. Ten years later, there were four children in the family. James farmed all his life in rural Woodstock although in the 1940 census, he also worked as a salesman in a general store. Lois F. Artz appeared as one of six children living at home in 1930. She married Odin Guy Sheetz (1892-1965) in 1933. In both the 1940 and 1950 censuses, Lois “Sheetz” was still married but living with her parents on the farm. Her husband was not listed. She stayed with her parents for many years and her obituary noted she had been an active member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Woodstock throughout her life.
