Jimmy was the third child born in Strasburg to Timothy B. (1887-1944) and Lillian R. (Smith) (1904-1970) Phalen. In 1930, he and his two siblings, Cecelia A. and Timothy A., lived with their father on West King Street. His father was an engineer for the steam railroad. His mother was not listed. In the 1940 census, the three children were living on “A” Street in Strasburg with their great aunt and great uncle, Hugh and Ida Stoneburner. The children's parents were not living with them. When Jimmy registered for the WWII draft in 1945, he still lived there. By 1950, Jimmy lived in Miami, Florida, with his sister, Cecelia, and her husband. His mother, who was divorced, also lived with them. Jimmy worked as a furniture re-finisher in a secondhand furniture store. A year or so later, he married Naomi Velez (1926-2011) in Florida. Naomi was born in Ybor City, Florida. Jimmy enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1954 and served until May 1956, when he was discharged. In 1958, Jimmy and his wife moved to Merritt Island in Brevard County, Florida, where he worked for Lockheed and Boeing Space Operations for 37 years. The couple had two sons together, Tim and Sean, and lived out their lives in Florida. The data compiled included the following information (if known): names, names of enslavers, locations related to the person, birthdates, relationships, what happened to them (e.g., emancipation, willed, ran away), the records’ citations, and other notable information. Volunteers examined newspaper clippings and several books, including abstracts of wills, research notebooks, births indexes, and a publication on the history of Edinburg, Virginia. Her most passionate hobby was creating rubbings of medieval brass figures, traveling to Europe to learn the craft and to visit sculptures in England. While living in Shenandoah County, Joan was active with the Shenandoah County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary where she helped provide transportation services for patients, and was a disaster volunteer with the local chapter of the American Red Cross. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. (Gardner) Shaffer of Woodstock. She was born in Mt. Airy, North Carolina, to William Rush and Mary (Foster) Gardner. She grew up in Hillsville , Virginia, and graduated from Hillsville High School and James Madison University. She married John David Shaffer, founder and longtime President of Shaffer's Barbecue, in 1946. Together, they raised three children: George Vernon, Ann (Shaffer) Grisdale, and Katie (Shaffer) McAleer The couple lived in Woodstock and Joanna taught in the Shenandoah County Schools for over 30 years.
