He was the great grandnephew of George Washington and the last Washington to own Mount Vernon. During the US Civil War, he was a Lt. Colonel in the Confederate Army. In 1840 he graduated from the University of Virginia. Three years later, he married Eleanor Love Seldon. He purchased a farm in Fauquier County, Virginia called "Waveland" where he made his home. His wife died in 1860 from childbirth. When Virginia seceded from the Union John volunteered to defend Virginia in the oncoming conflict. He served as aide-de-camp on the staff of General Robert E. Lee in the campaign of western Virginia. He was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel on this campaign. While reconnoitering in the Cheat Mountains of now West Virginia he was shot by a bushwhacker and killed. Bemis with his 1913 Model T touring car. He was arrested soon after buying this car for speeding in Woodstock. The officer, who was riding a bicycle, reported he was travelling 15 miles per hour. Bemis was at one time owner and operator of the Woodstock Hotel. He lived from December 19, 1881 until October 11, 1966 and is buried in Massanutten Cemetery in Woodstock. Title A name given to the resource Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Description An account of the resource In 2018, the Truban Archives began compiling information to create a searchable database of enslaved people in Shenandoah County during the years 1772 to 1865. Under the direction of the archivist, several volunteers pored over various resources to compile spreadsheets of information. The data compiled included the following information (if known): names, names of enslavers, locations related to the person, birthdates, relationships, what happened to them (e.g., emancipation, willed, ran away), the records’ citations, and other notable information. The resources used to discover this information are varied, and all can be found at the Truban Archives. Volunteers examined newspaper clippings and several books, including abstracts of wills, research notebooks, births indexes, and a publication on the history of Edinburg, Virginia. Once the data of several hundred people were assembled, the spreadsheet was uploaded to the digital archives for public consumption. More people will be uploaded as the research progresses. Though much information has been found and made available to the public, unfortunately, Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Collection will never truly be completed. This is due to lost records, including missing newspaper copies and unrecorded information. Because of this, the collection is an ongoing process, with more entries being made as new information is discovered. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. John was a lifelong Woodstock area farmer and member of Valley Pike Church of the Brethren. His parents were Edward Andrew (1891-1978) and Sudie Frances (Hoffman) (1891-1965) Ryman. John registered for the WWII draft at the town hall in Woodstock where he reported that he was single and lived on his family’s farm. At that time, he was described as being 5’8” tall and 140 pounds. He married in August 1951, when he was in his early thirties. His bride was Dorothy Elizabeth Coleman, born in Summit Point, West Virginia. She was the 19-year old daughter of Daniel Alexander and Nellie Catherine (Bauserman) Coleman. When she married, she lived in Woodstock. The couple spent 52 years together and had a daughter, Shirley (Ryman) French. He is remembered for having been the president of Shaffer's, Inc. and Shaffer's Barbecue Service, retiring in 1990. John was born in Maurertown, the son of Vernon Spitler and Leah (Stover) Shaffer. He grew up in Maurertown, graduated from Woodstock High School and attended Palmer's Business School. He served as a bombardier in the Navy Air Corps in World War II and was stationed in England and North Africa. After his military service, John married Joanna (Gardner) Shaffer in 1946. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. He is standing on a chair in studio. John was a son of John and Eva (Sager) Hottel and the oldest of five children. He graduated from Woodstock High School in 1949 and went into the Army soon after. As a Sergeant, he served during the Korean War. John married Priscilla Agnes (Wallace) (1935-2013) in New Hampshire, in 1954, while he was stationed at Ft. Bragg, N.C. She was a 19-year old telephone operator from Nashua. The couple honeymooned in New York, Washington D.C., and Virginia before heading back to Ft. Bragg. Upon his discharge from the Army in 1955, Mr. Hottel became a police officer for the Nashua Police Department. He also worked in the sales division for McLaughlin-Mayflower Moving and Storage in Nashua for many years, often winning many awards for being the top salesman. He was a well-known and well-respected real estate broker in the city of Nashua. John and his wife spent 51 years together and had two children: Pamela and Douglas Hottel. At some point, they moved to Spring, Texas, where they spent their last years.
