Cooley Subject The topic of the resource Cooley, Charles Edward (1917-1998) Description An account of the resource Portrait photograph of Charles Edward Cooley, in profile, as a young man. Charles was born in Amherst, Virginia, the son of Clarence Walter Cooley, a traveling salesman born in Warrenton, and Sadie (McGraw) Cooley, born in Amherst. He grew up mostly on W. King Street, Strasburg, and was one of five children. He graduated from Emory and Henry College in Washington County, Virginia, and served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during WWII. In 1943, while still a Navy Officer, Charles married Marian Paige Stover. She was born in Strasburg, the daughter of Frank Carson and Mary Virginia (Funk) Stover. The couple raised three children together: Craig Stover Cooley, Cela Annette (Cooley) Watson, and Cynthia Paige (Cooley) Conine. After the war, he continued his education with a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Richmond. He also did graduate level work at the University of Virginia and the University of Colorado School of Banking. Charles worked as a teacher, coach and then Assistant Principal at Strasburg High School. After that, he and his family moved to Rockingham County where Charles was the Principal of Harrisonburg High School from 1949-1957. From education, Charles moved to banking. He worked as an executive Vice President of the former Harrisonburg Loan and Thrift Corporation which later became part of Crestar Bank. During the late 1960s, he joined Rockingham National Bank as vice president, retiring in the early 1980s. While in Harrisonburg, he was active in the community. He served two terms on the Harrisonburg School Board and was on the Harrisonburg Recreation Commission. He was a founder of the city’s United Way and its educational television station. He was also a member of the Northampton and Harrisonburg Education association and the Harrisonburg Rotary Club. He moved back to Strasburg after he retired and lived on Crim Drive. Having taken up golf in the 1950’s, it was, perhaps, unsurprising, that he died of a sudden heart attack while on the third hole of the Bowling Green County Club in Front Royal. He was 81 years old. She married Dick Delford Bowman (1928-2018) in 1949. He had graduated from Triplett High School and had a degree in Accounting. He was interested in farming. Dick Bowman and his older brother started a John Deere tractor and equipment dealership in Mount Jackson in 1955. He also farmed. Over the decades, Barbara raised three children and helped her husband grow the farm and business. The couple lived on South Middle Road on the original Bowman homeplace and were actively involved with their community and church during their years together. He later graduated from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, with undergraduate and graduate degrees in chemical engineering. While a student, he met and married Barbara Louise Rogge, from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She was the daughter of Edward Sidonius (1923-1988) and Evelyn Elizabeth (Kling) (1926-2005) Rogge, Jr. They married just before Christmas in 1966 in Harrisonburg, Virginia, while both were students at Virginia Tech. They have three sons. By 1970, Thomas worked for Dupont De Nemours Company in Camden, South Carolina. He had a long career in the design and construction of facilities worldwide working for DuPont and Allied Signal/Honeywell. After, he and his wife moved to Moneta, Virginia, near Smith Mountain Lake, where Thomas entered the real estate sales business in the early 2000’s. He and his wife have been very active in their Moneta community as well. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
