Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. Linden Bower Coffman was born in Mt. Airy, Va., a son of Clinton and Virgie (Bowers) Coffman. Linden was a 1941 graduate of Woodstock High School. During WWII, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he received the Purple Heart. During his life, he worked as a meat cutter for Tom Eagle's Slaughterhouse, clerked in the F&G Supermarket in Woodstock, and was a partner in the Woodstock Pool Hall. He retired from the Woodstock Post Office after 25 years of service. His first wife was Alese Selma Hoffman, the daughter of Harry Cecil (1902-1964) and Golda E. (Ritenour) (1904-1927) Hoffman. The couple had three children together -- Sandra S., Ronald Franklin, and Holly -- before she died of breast cancer. Mary Ann Williamson wrote about Linden and his family in her book, The History of Edinburg, Virginia. In the book, she notes that the Winesburg family were prominent tinsmithers in Edinburg. Linden lived on High Street in Edinburg, but located his roofing company on Main Street. Not only was Linden the owner of the Winesburg Roofing Company, he also owned the Pearl White theater and a restaurant. He was noted as having owned the first automobile in Edinburg. On the back of the photograph, someone labeled it as being Malcolm Winesburg and that it was taken in Edinburg on High Street. There is also the number 21 written on the back. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. George William Smith (1900-2000) was an African American citizen of the town of Woodstock who was noted for his collections, including many items rescued from the trash. He lived on Water Street and attended Mt. Zion Methodist Church in Woodstock. Smith is buried at the Riverview Cemetery in Woodstock. Two hundred and seventy nine of the rescued photographs that are part of this collection were taken and/or processed by Woodstock photographer Hugh Morrison. An amateur photographer, George Smith took hundreds of photographs of the town during the 1980s and early 1990s for his amusement. These images are available at the Shenandoah County Library but have not yet been digitized.
