Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Mabel was born to Carl Raymond and Susie Vernie (Riffey) Mauck. She first married James Medgar Cook (1906-1946), originally from Wakeman's Grove. He worked as a barber and lived in Woodstock when he died. In the two years they were together, the couple had one daughter, Carolyn. A few years later, Mabel married Maxwell Alexander Miller (1921-1993) in Toms Brook, the son of Lacey James and Bessy May (Racey) Miller. He was a farmer from Edinburg. He also served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Mabel had three daughters with her second husband: Kay, Jean and Maxine. She was a member of Columbia Furnace Brethren Church. Title A name given to the resource Mabel Runion Subject The topic of the resource Runion, Mable Lantz Mills (Va) Description An account of the resource Mabel Runion spent most of her life in the Lantz Mill’s community. Her and her husband Peter moved there in 1938 after living for a few years in the Fairview Community. The Runions were known for the wide array of animals that lived on their farm. A stream bisected their property and they raised a large assortment of water fowl. The couple also had rabbits, pigeons, and lambs that they sold. In 1979 the couple had 86 sheep. In addition to farming, Mabel also worked at Windsor Knit and Rocco plants in Edinburg Virginia before retiring. She also raised four children, two sons and two daughters. In her spare time she was an active member of the Union Forge United Methodist Church. Mabel died in 1995 at the age of 83. George William Smith (1900-2000) was an African American citizen of the town of Woodstock who was noted for his collections, including many items rescued from the trash. He lived on Water Street and attended Mt. Zion Methodist Church in Woodstock. Smith is buried at the Riverview Cemetery in Woodstock. Two hundred and seventy nine of the rescued photographs that are part of this collection were taken and/or processed by Woodstock photographer Hugh Morrison. An amateur photographer, George Smith took hundreds of photographs of the town during the 1980s and early 1990s for his amusement. These images are available at the Shenandoah County Library but have not yet been digitized. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs.
