Title A name given to the resource Martha Henkel Subject The topic of the resource Henkel, Martha New Market (Va) Henkel Maternity Hospital (New Market Va) Description An account of the resource Martha Henkel always said “I loved my babies.” After delivering over 1500 of them, its apparent she did. Martha came to New Market in 1923 with her husband Stuart. She had grown up in Philadelphia and was trained as a nurse . In New Market she operated a boarding house until 1941, when she opened a maternity hospital, the only such institution in town. During her career, which spanned three decades, Martha delivered babies in towns from Woodstock south to Broadway and Timberville. She recounted births in homes, cars, and the street. Martha proudly boasted “ I never lost a mother or a baby.” Mrs. Henkel also cared for local “welfare children.” Many of these were sick and she “nursed them until they died.” Others were eventually adopted. As she lamented in 1979, “all stayed with me.” Martha Henkel died in 1982 at the age of 85. She was survived by two children, four grand children, five great-grand children, and thousands of babies that she helped enter the world. Title A name given to the resource Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Description An account of the resource In 2018, the Truban Archives began compiling information to create a searchable database of enslaved people in Shenandoah County during the years 1772 to 1865. Under the direction of the archivist, several volunteers pored over various resources to compile spreadsheets of information. The data compiled included the following information (if known): names, names of enslavers, locations related to the person, birthdates, relationships, what happened to them (e.g., emancipation, willed, ran away), the records’ citations, and other notable information. The resources used to discover this information are varied, and all can be found at the Truban Archives. Volunteers examined newspaper clippings and several books, including abstracts of wills, research notebooks, births indexes, and a publication on the history of Edinburg, Virginia. Once the data of several hundred people were assembled, the spreadsheet was uploaded to the digital archives for public consumption. More people will be uploaded as the research progresses. Though much information has been found and made available to the public, unfortunately, Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Collection will never truly be completed. This is due to lost records, including missing newspaper copies and unrecorded information. Because of this, the collection is an ongoing process, with more entries being made as new information is discovered.
