Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Title A name given to the resource Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Description An account of the resource In 2018, the Truban Archives began compiling information to create a searchable database of enslaved people in Shenandoah County during the years 1772 to 1865. Under the direction of the archivist, several volunteers pored over various resources to compile spreadsheets of information. The data compiled included the following information (if known): names, names of enslavers, locations related to the person, birthdates, relationships, what happened to them (e.g., emancipation, willed, ran away), the records’ citations, and other notable information. The resources used to discover this information are varied, and all can be found at the Truban Archives. Volunteers examined newspaper clippings and several books, including abstracts of wills, research notebooks, births indexes, and a publication on the history of Edinburg, Virginia. Once the data of several hundred people were assembled, the spreadsheet was uploaded to the digital archives for public consumption. More people will be uploaded as the research progresses. Though much information has been found and made available to the public, unfortunately, Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Collection will never truly be completed. This is due to lost records, including missing newspaper copies and unrecorded information. Melissa was born in Hardy County, West Virginia, to Isaac Milton (1856-1950) and Mary Catherine (Sager) (1858-1935) Richman. She married Taylor Ulysses Borden (1876-1935) in October 1898 when she was just 17 years old. Taylor, a farm hand, was the son of William Henry (1852-1928) and Caroline Virginia (Hamman) (1853-1916) Borden. Together, the couple had four sons and three daughters. They lived in the Harrisville area, near Toms Brook. Tragically, Melissa’s husband went pheasant hunting one afternoon just before Christmas, 1935, and never returned. When the family raised the alarm, a search party found Taylor dead about 2 miles west of his home in the foothills of North Mountain. The County coroner determined he died of natural causes. Melissa’s mother also died in the same year. This photograph was probably taken many years later. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. Melvin was born near Conicville, the son of Erasmus A. (1963-1917) and Virginia Catherine (Stickley) (1896-1965) Lutz. He attended Roanoke College. When he registered for the WWI draft in June 1917, Melvin’s occupation was “miller” and his employer was his father. He still lived near Conicville. He married Fleta Ivis (Sheetz) (1896-1965) Lutz in 1919. She was the daughter of Linden Arthur (1874-1943) and Charlotte Ann (Barton) (1878-1924) Sheetz, from Edinburg. Her father was a carpenter. In both the 1930 and 1940 censuses, Melvin and Fleta lived in Edinburg where Melvin worked as an insurance salesman. They had a daughter, Mary Ann (Lutz) Williamson. Melvin’s widowed father-in-law, Linden A. Sheetz, also lived with them. Melvin was a life-long member of St. James Lutheran Church at Hudson’s Crossroads. He was also a member of the Edinburg Lions Club. Mary Ann grew up in Edinburg. She graduated from Mary Washington College in 1950, taught school for two years after graduation, then married Robert Lynn Williamson, a VMI graduate and Korean War veteran. The couple had five children: Charlotte, John, Penelope Ann, Robert, and Mary. Mary Ann earned a Master's of Humanities degree from the University of Richmond and a doctorate from the University of Virginia. She taught elementary and middle school, and later accepted professorships at Virginia Commonwealth University and Virginia Union University. She was Director of Computer Learning for Control Data and the Private Industry Council in Richmond, where the family lived for many years. Mary Ann is most remembered in Edinburg for the work she did after she retired. In addition to writing many books (including “The History of Edinburg, Virginia” in 1994), Mary Ann created the Edinburg Heritage Foundation, and led a campaign to save the Edinburg Mill, now a museum. Mary Ann was vice president of the Board of Trustees at the Shenandoah County Library. She also served as president of the Shenandoah County Historical Society and was a board member of the Shenandoah County Music Festival. Most notably, perhaps, for almost 25 years she wrote the monthly newsletter for the Edinburg Heritage Foundation. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Melvin was born near Conicville, the son of Erasmus A. (1963-1917) and Virginia Catherine (Stickley) (1896-1965) Lutz. He attended Roanoke College. When he registered for the WWI draft in June 1917, Melvin’s occupation was “miller” and his employer was his father. He still lived near Conicville. He married Fleta Ivis (Sheetz) (1896-1965) Lutz in 1919. She was the daughter of Linden Arthur (1874-1943) and Charlotte Ann (Barton) (1878-1924) Sheetz, from Edinburg. Her father was a carpenter. In both the 1930 and 1940 censuses, Melvin and Fleta lived in Edinburg where Melvin worked as an insurance salesman. They had a daughter, Mary Ann (Lutz) Williamson. Melvin’s widowed father-in-law, Linden A. Sheetz, also lived with them. Melvin was a life-long member of St. James Lutheran Church at Hudson’s Crossroads. He was also a member of the Edinburg Lions Club. Mary Ann grew up in Edinburg. She graduated from Mary Washington College in 1950, taught school for two years after graduation, then married Robert Lynn Williamson, a VMI graduate and Korean War veteran. The couple had five children: Charlotte, John, Penelope Ann, Robert, and Mary. Mary Ann earned a Master's of Humanities degree from the University of Richmond and a doctorate from the University of Virginia. She taught elementary and middle school, and later accepted professorships at Virginia Commonwealth University and Virginia Union University. She was Director of Computer Learning for Control Data and the Private Industry Council in Richmond, where the family lived for many years. Mary Ann is most remembered in Edinburg for the work she did after she retired. In addition to writing many books (including “The History of Edinburg, Virginia” in 1994), Mary Ann created the Edinburg Heritage Foundation, and led a campaign to save the Edinburg Mill, now a museum. Mary Ann was vice president of the Board of Trustees at the Shenandoah County Library. She also served as president of the Shenandoah County Historical Society and was a board member of the Shenandoah County Music Festival. Most notably, perhaps, for almost 25 years she wrote the monthly newsletter for the Edinburg Heritage Foundation.
