Funkhouser standing in his U.S. Army uniform from the WWI era. Oliver Edward "O.E." Funkhouser was a Shenandoah County native who served in the US Army during World War One. Oliver was born on September 29, 1895 in Orkney Springs Virginia. His parents were James E. and Catherine (Tusing) Funkhouser. When he completed his postwar military service record survey he listed "farmer" as his occupation and wrote that he worked for his father. Oliver Funkhouser was inducted into service on October 8 1917. He served in Company E, 318th regiment, 80th infantry division. His training as conducted at Camp Lee between October 8 1917 and May 22 1918. Funkhouser was sent to France and deployed to the Octorise Sector in July of 1918 where he saw action. On July 30 of that year he was wounded when shrapnel struck his right hip and then hospitalized until December 1918. He noted this left him with a slight disability. On May 27, 1919 he returned to the United States and was discharged as a Private 1st Class on June 4, 1919. He returned to Orkney Springs where he continued to farm. The only observation he left about his war experience was when he noted on his postwar military service record survey that the war had no effect on his religious beliefs. The name, "O.E. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
