Ruth was one of many children born to Albert Alonza (1864-1922) and Clara Virginia (Feller) (1885-1952) Copp. She grew up on a farm in the Saumsville area, but her father died when she was a toddler. Her older brothers and widowed mother continued to farm. Ruth married Robert Stevenson Daily (1917-2000) in the summer of 1940. At the time, he was working for the C.C.C. as a foundry engineer (core maker) at Camp Roosevelt near Edinburg. He was born in Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania, to Robert James and Elizabeth (McHugh) Daily. After their wedding, Robert registered for the WWII draft in October 1940 where he was described as being 5’6” tall and 136 pounds with a scar over his right eye. Four years later, he enlisted in the Army and served as a Sergeant. By 1950, the couple had two young children, Virginia, 8 years old and born in Pennsylvania (who is pictured in this photograph), and Roberta, 2 years old and born in Maryland. The family lived in Colesville, Maryland, where Robert operated a bull dozer at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory. Ruth and her husband spent their later years together in Maurertown. They are buried in Saumsville. Virginia Marie Daily married Berlin Leonard Cooper in Arlington, Virginia, just after Christmas, in 1963. At that time, she worked as a telephone operator with C& P. Her new husband was an inspector for the Virginia Department of Highways. He was born in Winchester, the son of John Calvin and Lelia Virginia (Brill) Cooper, and lived in Strasburg. After they married, the couple lived in Toms Brook for many years. The name, "Robt. Daily", is written on the glass plate. In November 1947, Ruth married 22-year old Virgil Hortense Gochenour, a sheet metal worker living in Toms Brook. Virgil was born in Hardy County, West Virginia, the son of Russell Lowell Gochenour and Ollie Estelle Clark. When she died, Ruth was employed as a worker in a clothing factory. Early in their marriage, the couple moved to the Newport area of eastern Virginia where, in 1920, Houston worked as a machinist in a shipyard while Sadie looked after their young son, Charles Houston Clements (1917-1983). Sadie’s younger brother, Johnnie Reid, also lived with them. He was a painter in the ship yard. Both the 1930 and 1940 censuses listed the family as living on Court Street in Woodstock. “Hugh” was a barber with his own shop. By 1940, Sadie was a beautician with her own shop. After her husband died, Sadie continued to work as a hairdresser in Woodstock for many years. Her last years were spent in Salem, Virginia, where she died. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Sadie lived most of her life in and around the town of Woodstock. She worked as a cook for the school system and later for Shenandoah County Memorial Hospital where she retired from as a dietician. Outside of work and her family she volunteered with the Woodstock Fire Department’s Ladies Auxiliary, cooking for many of the organization’s fundraising dinners.
