Billy and Betty were two of the many children born to John Melvin (1894-1955) and Rosa Elizabeth (Grimm) (1894-1979). The family was from the St. Luke area of the Shenandoah County. Billy and Betty’s father farmed and was also a veterinarian. Billy attended George Washington University in Washington D.C. and became a pharmacist. There are many short mentions of him in Northern Virginia Daily social column articles between 1946 and 1951 as he went back and forth from school to visit his parents. He married Sandra Elizabeth Gray at the age of 34. She was born in Washington D.C. and worked as a bookkeeper when she married. Her parents were Frank M. and Elizabeth (Hutchins) Gray. The couple settled in Fredericksburg, Virginia, in their later years. In the 1950 census, Betty Jean Kipps was the only child still living on the farm with her parents. Her first husband was named "Saxton". In 1961, she married Alan Price, a salesman born in Moline, Illinois, and living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His parents were David and Helen Clara (Tappendorf) Price. Betty and Alan settled in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Floyd was born in Toms Brook, the first son, third child, of twelve children born to the late Elva Catherine (Senseney) (1902-2003) and Martin Luther (1893-1984) Bauserman. He graduated from Toms Brook High School in 1943, a class of nine girls and nine boys. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving two years, and a lifelong member of the American Legion Post 199 of Woodstock having served as Post Commander and named "Mr. Legionare". After his military service, Floyd returned to his job at the American Viscose Plant (later known as Avtex Fibers) in Front Royal, and stayed there for more than 46 years. He married Joanne Mae Nofsinger in Hagerstown, Maryland, in February 1948. His bride was from Strasburg. In the 1950 census, the couple lived on Sharpe Street in Strasburg and had a 1-year old daughter, Connie J. Bauserman. Floyd worked as a “warper” at the viscose plant. The marriage did not last and they divorced in 1960. Floyd married again, in 1966, to 22-year old Eunice Frances Butler. She had been born in El Reno, Oklahoma, to Lewis Charles and Isabell Frances (Pearson) Butler. Both Floyd and Eunice worked together as “textile workers”. With Eunice, Floyd had two additional children: a son, Scott Lee Bauserman, and a daughter, Karen Leigh (Bauserman) Estep. He retired in from Avtex Fibers in 1989 and, according to his obituary, was well-liked and respected by his co-workers, both men and women. Floyd is buried in Panorama Gardens Memorial Cemetery in Waterlick, Virginia. He was a lifelong Shenandoah County resident from rural Woodstock. Floyd was the youngest of four children born to Jacob Otis and Nellie Catherine (Miller) Hoover, a farming family from the Woodstock area. In the 1930 and 1940 censuses for the Stonewall District, Floyd and his family lived with his maternal grandparents on their farm. When he registered for the WWII draft, he was described as being 5’7” tall and 136 pounds. After his first year of high school, Floyd enlisted in the military as a Private and served from August 1944 to June 1946. By 1950, Floyd’s grandparents were no longer living but his remaining family still lived at the farm. Floyd had a job as a shipping clerk in a coat factory. He married Mary Alice “Snookie” (Wisman) (1927-2017) Hoover in 1951 in Woodstock. Her parents were Lester Lynn and Eltie (Richard) Wisman. She had attended high school in Alexandria, Virginia. Over their many years together, the couple had a son, Gary H. Hoover, and a daughter, Marilyn (Hoover) Sollenberger. Both Floyd and his wife are buried in Woodstock. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. Simon was the son of the founder of Wender’s Department Store in Woodstock, William M. Wender (1881-1932) and his wife, Minnie (Howard) Wender (1882-1961), both originally from Baltimore, Maryland. Simon was born in Pennsylvania. He grew up on N. Church Street in Woodstock with his sister, Lenora. When his father died, Simon and his sister were left in charge of the flagship store in Woodstock as well as another in Mt. Jackson. The Wenders store was a well-known fixture in the area until they closed in the early 1970’s. The local newspapers published many short notices about Simon Wender’s involvement in the community. Simon married Rosella (Orndorff) Wender (1909-2003). She was born in Strasburg to Walter R. and Effie Catherine Orndorff. Simon and Rosella had two children together, William M. and Deborah Jean Wender. Simon and his wife are buried in Beth El Cemetery in Harrisonburg, where they attended services. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
