(Barbe) (1903-1997) Description An account of the resource Photograph of Elsie V. (Barbe) Conner seated beside blooming daisies at the Hottel home place in Mt. Olive, Virginia. Elsie was born in Fishers Hill, near Strasburg, to Moses Walton (1878-1944) and Lillie Ann (Hamman) (1878-1926) Barbe. She was one of at least eight children. She married Carl Irving Conner (1895-1972), a veteran of WWI, and the son of John and Fannie Belle (Wolverton) Conner. Early in their marriage, the couple spent some time at the Hottel-Keller homeplace near Mt. Olive as at least one of their daughters, Lucille, was born there in 1923. Later on, the couple lived in the Maurertown area, near Harrisville Road, where they farmed. When she died, the Daily News Leader newspaper published her obituary on February 25, 1997 (page 2). The article noted that she retired from Blue Bell in Woodstock after more than 20 years. She was an active member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir. She left behind a son, Carl Conner Jr., and two daughters, Lucille Baker and Joyce Hamrick. Burton was from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, one of five children born to Jacob William (1874-1948) and Mabel (Blough) (1874-1948) DeChant. His father worked for the Blough Manufacturing Company in 1920 and 1930. After he graduated from Massanutten Military Academy in 1927, Burton went to Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. His name appeared as part of the Freshman class in the 1929 yearbook. He married Jacqueline Alice (Neblett) (1913-1979) Dechant in New Jersey in 1935. The couple lived first in Concord, PA, where, in 1940, Burton worked as a runner in a paper company. Sometime after that, the couple moved to Florida where they remained for the remainder of their years together. They raised three children: Burton F. Jr., Richard J., and Jacqueline “Dutchess” De Chant. Burton served in the U.S. Army as a Sergeant from 1944 to 1946. Apart from his military service, Burton worked as a funeral director at Wilhelm Thurston Funeral Home in St. Petersburg for many years, retiring in 1974. His obituary noted he was a member of the Massanutten Alumni Association when he died. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Edmund was a member of Massanutten Academy's class of 1927. This photograph appeared in the academy's 1927 yearbook. In it, they note he is from Cedarhurst New York and his nicknames were "Irish" and "Micky." Edmund was born on Long Island, in Cedarhurst, New York, the second of five children born to Edmund Arthur (1875-1935) and Adelaide E. (died 1928) Kavanagh. His father was a well-known and successful real estate broker. Edmund grew up in Hempstead, and stayed in the area for most of his life. After graduating from MMA, he moved to New York City where he met and married Ellen (or Eileen) Bernadette Vaughn, an Irish immigrant from Belfast. She had arrived in 1927 and worked as a waitress in a restaurant in New York. She and Edmund married in Brooklyn in 1931. Early in their marriage, the couple lived at 4520 Broadway, in New York city. Three years later, Eileen became a U.S. Citizen. By 1940, the couple lived on Central Avenue in Lawrence, a village near Hempstead. They had a 4-year old daughter, Margaret P., and Edmund worked as a clerk at the high school. The 1950 census found Edmund and Eileen still in Lawrence, but with three children: Patricia (14), Brian (11) and Edmund (6). He was a math teacher at the high school there. Only two years later, Edmund died unexpectedly, at the age of only 46 years.
