Bushong Subject The topic of the resource Bushong, William Lee (1914-1992) Bushong, Gilbert Franklin (1916-2011) Description An account of the resource Damaged image of William Lee Bushong and his younger brother, Gilbert Franklin Bushong, as children. Both are wearing sailor-themed outfits. They were the sons of Emery Franklin (1889-1949) and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Sarah (Wisman) (1889-1972) Bushong. The brothers grew up with two younger brothers on a farm west of Woodstock on Fairview Road. In 1921, Lee and Gilbert survived a harrowing 250-foot fall over a precipice across the river from the Triplett power plant. It occurred when the horse their father was using to pull a wagon up a mountain was spooked by something. The horse broke away and ran over the cliff with the wagon and boys attached. The two boys were found badly bruised but alive at the foot of the cliff near the river. They had to be rescued by boat. The newspaper article described the event as “one of the most remarkable escapes in the history of the mountains”. The name, "Bushong" is written on the glass plate. Emulsion damage obscures the right side of the photograph where the arm of another brother is visible. Linden was the son of William Dallas Fravel (1888-1962), of Woodstock, and Olive Catherine (Stultz) Fravel (1889-1982). He was born west of Woodstock. Linden had finished 2 years of college when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943. He became an aviation cadet and completed primary and basic pilot training before becoming an aerial gunner in B-24 Liberators. Linden served in the 15th Air Force, 459th Bomb Group, 756th Bomb Squadron in Italy during his WWII service. After the war, he married Mary Jane (Haislip) Fravel (1924-2018) in 1948. She was born in Salem, Virginia, and worked as a secretary for Lewis-Gale Hospital there when they married. Her parents were Walter Armstrong and Mary Leone (Johnston) Haislip. The couple lived in the Stephens City area of Frederick County for much of their married lives. Linden operated "Fravel's Plant and Fish Garden" as a nurseryman in his later years. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Les was a cadet at Massanutten Academy from 1922-1924. He later returned to the Academy and is remembered for having served on the faculty there as a coach for the academy's swim and football teams from 1928-1942. Les Fouts was born in Chicago and grew up in South Haven, Van Buren County, Michigan. In 1910, he was the oldest of five children born to Charles O. (1870-1941) and Louise C. (Mellondorf) (1874-1932) Fouts. His father was a barber. He went to L.C. Mohr High School in South Haven, Michigan, for two years. Next, Les attended Massanutten Academy from 1922 to 1924. During the summer of 1923, Les married a girl from his hometown high school in Michigan, Mary Meader. At the time, Les’ occupation was “student”. Mary was a year behind him in school and they married in neighboring Berrien County. This marriage did not last. Les married Bertha Ely (1909-1993) in Lake County, Indiana, in June 1928. She was born in Michigan to Peter Franklyn (1877-1927) and Phebe Elvira (Woodruff) (1885-1952) Ely. Les and Bertha were married more than 50 years before Les died. Both the 1930 and 1940 censuses found the family living in Woodstock where Les worked at Massanutten Academy as an athletic coach and instructor. He and Bertha had two children, Lois and Leslie J. Fouts, Jr. Both of their children were born in Michigan. The family later moved to Georgia where, by 1950, Les worked as a teacher and coach for the private school, Woodward Academy, in Atlanta. His wife had a part-time job managing a book store. When Les died many years later, he was a retired football and swimming coach for Woodward Academy. Both he and his wife are buried in Fulton County, Georgia. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
